APA Format see text pp (pp in 4th Ed.) How to present citations in text (p.426; p.410 in 4th) According to Smith and Walker (1996) the APA publication guide should be used as a reference book as opposed to a “how to” book. The APA publication manual should be utilized as a reference book as opposed to a step by step guide (Smith & Walker, 1996).

APA Format - citations in text cont’d If there are 2 authors, cite surnames of both authors every time If 3-5 authors, cite all surnames the first time then the surname of first author and et al. for all subsequent citations –e.g., 1st citation: Milliken, Joordens, Merikle & Seiffert (1998) 2nd citation: Milliken et al. (1998) If there are 6 or more authors, use surname of first author and et al. for every citation

Sample introduction p. 409 (p.394 in 4th) reference page: p. 419 (p.403 in 4th) reference entry formats p (p in 4th) based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (4th Ed.) so you can use it also if you can find a copy.

APA Style - References Journal article: Milliken, B., Joordens, S., Merikle, P., & Seiffert, A. (1998). Selective attention: A re-evaluation of the implications of negative priming. PsycInfo Assignment Due: In two weeks in lab Come up with 5 research questions and choose one to research using PsycInfo Find at least 3 of the references in the library, at least 2 must be research (empirical) journal articles. Record ref. Info (title, authors, journal, vol, page#) Read them, noting pertinent info such as : What topic did the authors investigate? What were their hypotheses? What variables were under study? What were the main findings?

PsycInfo Assignment - cont’d Write a summary of the research you have found. –It should read like an introduction to a journal article. –Start with research question, logical progression, broad to narrow reviewing literature, using the minimum 3 sources, end with hypothesis put all references in an APA style reference page Print out a reference that you were unable to find in the library and complete an interlibrary loan form (attach printout). Do not submit it to library

PsycInfo Assignment Writing an Introduction APA style Begin with your research question Not simply a summary – should compare and contrast What material should an introduction contain? topic the authors investigated their hypotheses, variables, main findings End with your hypotheses

PsycInfo Assignment To Summarize: 1) a list of 5 research questions, identify the one you used for the rest of the assignment 2) an introduction using at least 3 of the articles relevant to the research question, ending with your research (experimental) and null hypotheses 3) a printout of the 5 references you found using PsycInfo 4) a properly-formatted APA-style reference section for at least 5 references relevant to your research topic 5) a completed interlibrary loan form for a reference not available in the Acadia library (highlight this reference on the PsycInfo printout).
