N. Merat (some of the) Human Factors challenges of vehicle automation Trust and Acceptance Loss of skill Loss of Situation Awareness Driver out of the loop Mental models Shared Goals Transition of Control Who is in control? How will I know? Is it reliable? Can I trust it?

N. Merat AdaptIVe - AIM The vision of AdaptIVe is the widespread application of automated driving to improve road safety and address inefficiency in traffic flow whilst mitigating the environmental impact of road traffic. Performance is enhanced because drivers are supported in demanding or repetitive tasks. Vehicles can dynamically adapt the level of automation according to the current situation, can react more effectively to external threats and are resilient to different types of system and human failure.

SP3: Human Vehicle Integration DLR, ITS, Ford, VCC, WIVW, VTEC (Emma Johansson)

N. Merat Driver-system-vehicle interaction Figure from HAVEit Intentions, Abilities and Limitations and to control the vehicle together in a cooperative way

N. Merat Specific goals of AdaptIVe Controllability of automated systems, Transitions between different levels of automation, Solutions for arbitration and shared control Supporting the driver in maintaining situation awareness. How the driver can be supported when his/her state is impaired (e.g. due to drowsiness, boredom or distraction) … to what extent the driver can be allowed to engage in secondary tasks. …how measures of the driver state can be used to keep them in the loop during critical/necessary times.

N. Merat Functional Requirements How, When and Where: Information Warnings Interventions General support should be implemented in permanent driving situations as well as in event based support situations….. Close Distance Scenarios Highway Scenarios Urban Scenarios
