2 What is ASV ?  ASV = Advanced Safety Vehicle  Vehicles equipped with systems assisting the driver’s safe driving, utilizing the ITS technology Driving assistance : Providing information, warning, and control  Drastically reducing accidents caused by mis-operations of drivers  ASV project = Promotion of research and development of ASV technologies through the concerted cooperation of the government, academics and industries

4 Design Principles of ASV 1.Driver Assistance ASV technologies should understand driver’s wills and support their safe driving based on the concept of driver responsibility. 2.Driver Acceptance ASV technologies should be easy to use and be trusted by drivers. This means that a human-machine interface design should be appropriately implemented. 3.Social Acceptance ASV technology-equipped vehicle must operate with unequipped vehicles and pedestrians. Therefore, we must consider how to obtain proper understanding of the public.

5 “Concept of Driver Assistance“ (for driver load reduction control technologies) 1.The system should act after confirming the will and intention of the driver. 2.The system should assist driver in safety. 3.The system should be checked by the driver at any time. 4.The system should inspire a proper amount of confidence in the driver, not causing him to place too much confidence nor distrust in the system. 5.The system should be overridden by the driver. 6.The system’s control should be smoothly passed over to the driver when the situation goes beyond the range of assistance of the system. 7.The system should not make a negative impact to the traffic environment. 8.There should be mature society to accept the system.

7 Checking process using Concept of Driver Assistance as checking list MLIT checks a new technology for driver assistance through a manufacturer’s technical explanation on the consideration of it’s technology in accordance with “Concept of Driver Assistance.” For carrying the confirmation smoothly, technical guideline may be utilized.

8 Concept of Driver Assistance & Technical Guideline MLIT checks the design concepts of new technologies using “Concept of Driver Assistance.” If a technology has been confirmed to meet the technical guideline, checking is omitted Based on the result of checking, a technical guideline may be modified or newly defined.
