Sign up for Zot Alert Campus emergency text message service Used to notify the UCI community of a natural disaster, crisis response or need to secure the campus. Or search “Zot Alert” at OIT website.

Remote Access Use VPN software from OIT: – Allows you to view library and other campus web pages from off campus. Encrypts web traffic for better security.

HSSOE Computer Labs –AIRB 2040 – Building attached to parking structure Drop-in use and instruction. Lab is always open but building door is locked at 10:00pm Monday –Saturday and on all day on Sundays. Enter door code sent to your address first week. Go to student affairs office if you do not receive code. –Engineering Computing Trailer (ECT 123) Drop-in use and instruction. Use door code to enter after 5:00pm. Network Policy The following are NOT allowed: Downloading & sharing of copyrighted protected material Using excessive network bandwidth when it does not support your university research & educational goals UCI & UC Regents Policy UCI & UC Regents Policy UCI Electronic Communication Policy UCI Electronic Communication Policy

Network Policy What does this mean? NO Peer-to-Peer!! –Examples: Kazaa, Bit Torrent, PPLive And… No excess downloading, of any kind, of more than 1 GB per day. Exceptions for research.

Network Policy What happens? We find out about it. Computer support staff find out about malicious network activity through network scans by OIT. We receive messages from media companies stating that so and so has downloaded the latest Harry Potter movie, REMOVE IT.

Network Policy What happens to YOU? Your computer will be blocked. You will be asked to remove the material and to comply with US laws and University policy. Possible disciplinary action. Your faculty advisor may be notified. The Deans’ Office may be notified.

Network Policy WHY? The University is charged by peak bandwidth usage. High bandwidth = $$$ Universities have been penalized in US Courts for not complying with copyright laws.

Network Usage What is allowed: Personal and incidental use of network resources Ex: your mom (is OK) Use of network and computing resources in support of your research and educational goals Your faculty advisor should be able to confirm these goals when asked.
