Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER) How to write a scientific explanation (SP3)

Claim Your claim is a declarative statement that is similar to a thesis. (You make a claim in response to a question). ●The claim is usually one sentence in length. ●It must be accurate, specific, and completely answer the question.

Evidence The evidence is all of the information that supports your claim. ●Evidence must be sufficient and relevant to your claim. Not all information is considered evidence! ●Typically specific data/information. ●Sources such as: computer simulations, websites, textbook, class notes, personal experience, etc. ●Important to have numerous pieces of evidence to support your claim!

Reasoning Reasoning is the explanation that connects your claim to the evidence that supports it. ●Explains why the information you chose counts as evidence. ●Demonstrates a detailed understanding of the concepts involved and uses science vocabulary. ●Address all evidence and is to the point. ● Should be at least a few sentences in length.

Question: Are Viruses Alive? GROUP ACTIVITY: 1. Read the packets you have been given and review the attached tables. 2. Work with your group to answer the question. Use CER! 3. Document your group’s work on poster/whiteboard. 4. Gallery Walk- check out other groups’ posters while leaving 1 group member behind to explain your group’s point of view.

Assessment - Individual Writing Assignment (SP3) Due next class: First GRADE for SP3! Using what you learned and discussed today (from the packet, with your group and with other groups), Make your own CLAIM to answer the question, “Are viruses alive?” Be sure to use CER - support your claim with evidence and provide reasoning.
