La forma comparativa Comparing things

Whenever two qualities or quantities are compared, use más and menos.

To compare two things, use: más + adjetivo + que menos + adjetivo + que

Ejemplos… El baloncesto es más divertido que el tenis. Basketball is more fun than tennis.

Soccer is easier than hockey. El futbol es más fácil que el hockey.

El voleibol es menos interesante que el surfing. Volleyball is less interesting than surfing.

My bat is less expensive (caro) than your bat. Mi bate es menos caro que tu bate.

When things being compared are equal, use: tan + adjetivo + como

Los Twins son tan buenos como los Yankees. The twins are as good as the Yankees.

Marta runs as fast as Juan. Marta corre tan rápido como Juan.

The adjectives better and worse have special comparative forms: mejor(es) + que better than peor(es) + que worse than

Estas jugadoras son mejores que ésas. These players are better than those.

La cancha de Chicago es peor que la cancha de Houston. Chicago’s court is worse than Houston’s court.

Your glove is better than my glove. Tu guante es mejor que mi guante.

To express older and younger, use the adjectives mayor(es) + que older than menor(es) + que younger than

Soy mayor que mi hermano. Yo tengo 13 años y él tiene 10. I am older than my brother. I am 13, he is 10.

They are younger than us. Ellos son menores que nosotros.

Conduct an interview with a classmate and find out who & what they think is the best and the worst. Practice your comparative words: mas que, menos que, tan como, mejor, peor, mayor, and menor. Make sure to use complete sentences when writing down your partner’s responses to your questions.
