Sentence Outline Reminders Because it is good to get it right the first time!!!

Every entry in the Body portion of your outline MUST have a signal phrase whether it’s a paraphrase or a quotation. George Costanza, president of Van de Lay Industries contends that exporting products to China is better than importing (765). “I export Latex products and it profits our country and my employees!” reports Mr. Costanza (766).

Your In-text citations must match your Working Bibliography Page Working Bibliography Crane, Alex Dr. “TV is Too Much for Teens.” Psychology Today 19 Feb Print. Which Sentence is Correct?Which Sentence is Correct? The article “TV is Too Much for Teens,” declares that TV is a homework distraction (32). Dr. Alex Crane, psychologist and author of the article “TV is Too Much for Teens,” declares that TV is a homework distraction (32).

Keep it simple, please! Each entry is one sentence only. You will be able to use the remaining information on your card for sentences of explanation and analysis as you are writing your paper. Because of this, keep your cards in order! If you have a quote that is long, use ellipses to shorten the quote and use only the main idea.

….for instance Adrian Monk, private investigator for the San Francisco Police Department confirms, “It was the gum at the bottom of her shoe that served as the best evidence…….”

Save your “my idea” cards for your paper These “ideas” will serve as your sentences of analysis and explanation later as your write your paper. Ex: Mr. Monk’s ability to solve crimes has decreased the crime in his city proving that hiring extra police staff is essential in fighting crime.

Each subtopic section of your body must have entries from at least TWO sources to provide non-biased and credible evidence. Why?

Each subtopic also needs…………. BOTH  PARAPHRASES ◦AND ◦QUOTATIONS

Correctly format your article and book/magazine/newspaper titles. Articles titles are place in “Article Title.” Names of books, newspapers, and magazines are italicized.

Be Flexible……Be Logical…Think!! You may begin to shift cards that you originally placed in one sub-topic to another sub-topic area if it that card’s information better suits or supports another area.

Do not use phrases such as “My opposing argument is..” or “This topic suggests…” Simply write with a voice of authority. You’ve done the research and your paper is credible.

Be Organized!! Keep your cards in the same order as your outline……you will use their information to expand, explain, and analyze as you write your paper.

“Skinny is Killing Hollywood” WEB Paraphrase MEDIA INFLUENCES The amount of time a teen spends watching television effects the amount of pressure celebrity images have on them. Statistic prove that 60% of teens spend 40 hours or more a week watching television. The article “Skinny is Killing Hollywood,” details that the amount of time a teen spends watching television effects the amount of pressure celebrity images have on them. What if you don’t have an author’s name…….

The second signal phrase looks like this. The amount of time a teen spends watching television effects the amount of pressure celebrity images have on them (“Skinny is Killing”). You may abbreviate the title for a second signal phrase.

How to “Signal Phrase” a quote when the author of the article is different from the speaker of the quote: Signal the author’s name and credential first Add a few words of explanation about how this speaker is responding to your subtopic. Signal the speaker and his/her credential in your quote. In Mike Priestap’s article, “Let it Go,” he describes the feelings of dog owner, Carlos Hernandez who states, “I lost my dog to science” (124).

Let’s try it…. Author: Mick Jagger Publication/Job: Editor of Rolling Stone Magazine Speaker: Jack Black Credential: Actor : School of Rock movie Quote: “Rock and Roll should be a mandatory class at Collegiate Academy.” Source: Rolling Stone Magazine, pg. 57.

Random questions from you…. Can I switch my cards into other sub-topics? Do I need to enter every card? What if a note card is redundant or I don’t want to use it in my paper. Can I use first and second person in quotes? How do I know when to spell out numbers? If I don’t have a page number, should I use (WEB). Do I have to use a “first signal phrase” again when I used that source in another sub topic.
