Citing Sources to Avoid Plagiarizing Senior Project Mr. Brown By Dr. Heather Moschetta Woodland Hills High School

Warm Up What was the best part of your break? What was the best part of your Thanksgiving meal?

Outline Worksheet Is your thesis clear? Does your thesis state the opposing side first, then the supporting side? Now write down your top 5 (you may only have 3 or 4) main arguments opposing and supporting?

Citing Sources What is it? – Giving credit to the author(s) of the sources you use to write a paper Why do I have to do it? – If you don’t, it’s plagiarism – People make their living writing and publishing; if you do not give them credit, you are essentially stealing

Citing Sources When do I have to add a parenthetical citation? – For the outline, you need a citation at the end of every line that came from one of your sources All of my information is from my sources! Is there anything I don’t have to cite? – Your attention grabber – Your thesis statement – -Your opinion – Your conclusion

Citing Sources Does that mean that almost every line must have a parenthetical citation? – YES! In the paper you will take out some of them, but in the outline, just about every line will need a citation How do I format my parenthetical citations? – Examples on the next few slides

Print Sources With an Author – Author’s last name and page number – (Smith 10) Article Without an Author – Shortened version of the article title in quotation marks and page number – (“Sports Injuries” 3) Book Without an Author – Shortened version of the book title in italics and page number – (Sports Medicine 45)

Web Sources Online article with an author – Author’s last name – (Smith) Online article without an author – Shortened version of the article title in quotes – (“Sports Injuries”) Two articles with the same title, no authors – Shortened version of article title in quotes and publisher – (“Social Security” US Department of Treasury) – (“Social Security” Social Security Administration)

Works Cited Page You must turn in a Works Cited with your outline (10% of the Outline grade) Follow the guidelines on pages 34-37 for formatting each source Follow the guidelines on page 24 for formatting the Works Cited page
