The USAGreat Britain JULY AUGUST SEPTEMBER OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER Independence Day Halloween Columbus Day Halloween Guy Fawkes Night Remembrance Sunday Thanksgiving Day Christmas

Christian Holidays  Christmas:  children hang their stockings at the foot of their beds or by the fireplace for father Christmas to fill them (Britain)  children expect Santa Claus to come down the chimney (the USA)  For Christmas dinner they eat stuffed turkey, roast or mashed potatoes and Christmas pudding  On Boxing day (26th December) people visit other members of families

 Easter:  Pancake Day or Fat Tuesday people make pancakes to empty their cupboards before Lent starts  Children like Easter very much- the Easter Bunny comes with coloured chocolate eggs or marshmallow bunnies and jelly beans. Families paint eggs and decorate Easter trees with them. On Saturday they sometimes decorate Easter eggs and hide them in their houses and gardens for children to hunt for on Easter Sunday (the USA)

Saints´Holidays  St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland. Many people worldwide dress in green, eat Irish food and drink Guinness  St. Valentine was a bishop.  St. Andrew  St. David  St. George

Patriotic Holidays in UK  Guy Fawkes Night (November 5th) bonfires and fireworks in almost every town and village in Britain (catholics wanted to kill king James I by blowing up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder.  Remembrance Day = Poppy Day: November 11th at 11 o´clock- two - minute silence (at the moment when the First World War ended). People remeber soldiers who have died in wars since 1914.

Patriotic Holidays in the USA  Independence Day : July 4th. People celebrate nation´s birthday (the Delcaration of Independence was signed in 1776).  Thanksgiving Day : fourth Thursday in November. First celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrims. See another presentation.
