Measuring in Biology: Using the Metric System Unit: 1 (B)

What is the metric system? It is a system of measurements used by scientists to record measurements of length, volume, mass, and temperature. The metric system is also known as the International System of Units sometimes abbreviated SI. It is a universal system of measurements that is based on multiples of ten (10).

The Metric System The basic units in the metric system are as follows: –Length = meter –Volume = liter –Mass = gram –Temperature = Celsius (C) In the metric system water 0 degrees Celsius and it 100 degrees Celsius.

Kilo (k)----Hector (h)----Deca(da)----Basic Unit----Deci (d)----Centi(c)----Mili(m) Gram(g) Liter (l) Meter (m) Metric to Metric Conversion Chart

The Metric System The following prefixes can be placed on the basic units to change there meaning: –Kilo = one thousand –Centi = one hundredth –Milli = one thousandth –Deci = one tenth –Deca = ten –Hector = one hundred

Metric Conversions Metric to metric conversions- See Chart. Metric to English conversions: –1 meter = (39.4in) inches –1 kilogram = (2.2lbs) pounds –Normal human body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius = 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. –Normal room temperature is 21 degrees Celsius = about 66 degrees Fahrenheit.
