First Grade Social Studies Houses and Homes First Grade Social Studies

People around the world have different kinds of homes. Some live in houses.

Some people live in apartments.

People build homes using the resources of the land where they live.

Some homes in Kenya have roofs made from straw, or dried grass. http://encarta.msn.com/media_461514638_761572628_-1_1/Thatch_House_in_Kenya.html

People have to think about the weather where they build their homes. This place in Mexico is built of clay bricks called adobe that is dried in the hot desert sun. A desert is land that gets little rain. http://www.affordableadobe.com/

This house is in Norway. It is made from the trees in the forest around it. http://silverlaketimberhouse.com/

When it rains a lot, this river in the Amazon rain forest can flood. This house in Venezuela is built on stilts. They keep it dry above the river’s water. http://impressive.net/people/gerald/2007/01/13/06-42-38-sm.html

Some places are crowded. These homes in Italy are built close together. There is little open space between the homes.

This city in China has very little land for new homes. Some people live on boats.

People around the world live in all kinds of homes. http://depts.washington.edu/chinaciv/home/3intrhme.htm How about you?
