Studying Geography Section 2: Pages (textbook)

2 Physical and human geography contribute to the study of history
The Big Idea… Physical and human geography contribute to the study of history

3 Geography is the study of places and people
Main Idea #1 Geography is the study of places and people

4 Geography The study of earth’s physical and cultural features
Physical Geography Study land and its features Study climate Study environment: all the living and non-living things in the area Human Geography Study people… their culture Where they live, work, what kinds of homes do they live in, what foods do they eat, what is their religion

5 Main Idea #2 Studying location is important to both physical and human geography

6 Why study location? Study exact location, no 2 places are exactly the same. Small difference can have an affect on the way people live.

7 Use maps to study location….
Maps help with planning activities such as: Battles Looking for new land Designing cities and parks Finding homes, etc.

8 Learning about Regions…
Helps with understanding: Physical features: forests, grassland etc. Climate: desert, mountains, etc. Human characteristics: language, religion, etc.

9 A Region is… An area with one or more features that make it different from surrounding areas.

10 Geography and History are closely connected
You can piece together a lot about ancient cultures by knowing where people lived and what it was like. Why would humans choose to settle in an area like this? What kinds of resources do you think they might find and/or use?

11 Resources People settled where resources were plentiful… Animals Water
Fertile land Stones Trees

12 How does geography shape culture?
If you lived near water, usually fishing and boating were important Many of the first societies formed along rivers If you lived near forests, trees were used for wood People developed religious beliefs, many based on nature. For example; the people who settled along the Nile believed that “Hapi” controlled the Nile.

13 How does geography influence history?
Positive affects: Geography has affected the growth of societies; people who live near many natural resources could use their resources to gain wealth and power. What would be some positive affects of human interaction?

14 How does geography influence history continued?
Negative affects: Floods Drought Food shortages Ship wrecks What would be some negative affects of human interaction?
