Looking for new land
Designing cities and parks
Finding homes, etc.

Helps with understanding:
Physical features: forests, grassland etc.
Climate: desert, mountains, etc.
Human characteristics: language, religion, etc.

An area with one or more features that make it different from surrounding areas.

You can piece together a lot about ancient cultures by knowing where people lived and what it was like.

If you lived near water, usually fishing and boating were important
Many of the first societies formed along rivers
If you lived near forests, trees were used for wood
People developed religious beliefs, many based on nature.
For example; the people who settled along the Nile
believed that “Hapi” controlled the Nile.

13. How does geography influence history?
Positive affects:
Geography has affected the growth of societies; people who live near many natural resources could use their resources to gain wealth and power.
What would be some positive affects of human interaction?

Negative affects:
Floods
Drought
Food shortages
Ship wrecks
