Skill 4, Designing & Implementing Organization-Wide Cultural Competence Worksheet Worksheet 21, Writing a Case Example of Cultural Diversity Issues for use in Action Plan, page 109 Purpose: To demonstrate the 4 skills of cultural diversity competence through the action plan process in a brief time period Directions:  Describe a diversity issue or conflict occurring in a culturally diverse work setting within the last year. It can be an incident you personally experienced, or something you heard about. It may have such elements of diversity as gender, ethnicity, race, age, religion, sexual orientation, social economic status, verbal communication (language), non-verbal communication (body language such as gestures, eye contact, body smell, time orientation), or other cultural or social elements. It can be in relation to such roles as a supervisory relationship, co-worker relationship, or co-worker-customer/client relationship

THE FOUR SKILLS OF CULTURAL DIVERSITY COMPETENCE Cultural Diversity Competence is cultural understanding combined with interpersonal skills for developing effective relationships with culturally diverse people to form the basis for culturally competent organizations 1. Understand Culture is multilevel : personal, subcultures, mainstream U.S. (national) culture, & organization culture (s) 2. Understand the Barriers to Effective Communication and Positive Relationships: language (verbal), nonverbal, judgment, stress, stereotyping and discrimination, & organization/ institution-wide barriers 3. Understand and Practice -the personal cultural competencies -the dialogue, conflict recovery & problem-solving skills 4. Design and Implement Organization/Institution-Wide Change Strategies that Foster Cultural Diversity Competence Organization- wide (e.g., agency, school, business, hospital)
