READING FOR INFORMATION

Which is a characteristic of expository writing? A) it tells a story B) contains a plot and characters C) it is informational; contains facts D) it is fiction

C) it is informational; contains facts Expository writing is: Informative Sometimes explains a process Provides facts Is non-fiction

A) newspaper articles, recipes, and research papers B) newspaper articles, biographies, and narrative stories C) tall tales, myths, and research papers D) research papers, newspaper articles, and short stories

A) Newspaper articles, recipes, and research papers

We all know the big difference between fact and opinion…but the two can work together in expository texts! Facts are often used to SUPPORT an opinion. The opinion will probably be taken more seriously if there is a fact or two to back it up!

As you read the newspaper article, you will notice two distinct point of views that are reported. You will also notice facts from the text to support each point of view. Complete the template as I instruct you to do so. Hint: Remember the difference between fact and opinion? A fact is information that cannot be disputed; it is true. An opinion is what someone thinks.
