Sniper Plot Map Logan Genga

Exposition Meaning- part of the story in which the basic situation is outlined and the characters and main conflict are introduced. Event from the text- A republican sniper is on rooftop near the O’ Connell Bridge in Ireland, fighting in the Civil War. He is deciding whether he should lit his cigarette or not. Direct Quote- “On a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge, a Republican sniper lay watching. He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk a smoke.”

Rising Action Meaning- chain of events that takes place as the main character struggles to achieve his or her goal. Event from the text- the Republican sniper was shot at by the Free Staters sniper because he lit his cigarette on top of the roof, so the other sniper could see the spark. Direct Quote- “Cautiously he raised himself and peered over the parapet. There was a flash and a bullet whizzed over his head.”

Conflict Meaning- the point of highest emotional intensity; sometimes the point at which we learn the outcome of the conflict. Event from the text- the republican sniper has been shot in the arm and he has run out of bullets, so he has to come up with a plan that doesn’t involve a gun to kill his enemy, the Free Staters sniper. Direct Quote- “The sniper lay still for a long time nursing his wounded arm and planning escape. He must kill that enemy and he could not use his rifle. He had only a revolver to do it. Then he thought of a plan.”

Resolution Meaning- events following the climax in which any remaining issues are resolved. Event from the text- the republican sniper tricked the Free Staters Sniper so he would get up, and the republican sniper could kill him with his revolver. The republican sniper soon realized when he went to look at the body that he had just killed his brother. Direct Quote- “The sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face.”
