Prayer for politics and government Scriptures and prayer points for use in churches

Why should we pray for politics? I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, (1 Timothy 2: 1-4)

Prayer for local political leaders: Pray for your local MP (and their family) - ask God to give them wisdom, strength and integrity. Pray for your local Councillors - thank God for the work they do and ask that he will use them to bless your local area. Pray for Christians involved in public service locally (either as paid workers or volunteers), that God would make them effective as servants and bold as witnesses.

What is God’s will for politics? Counsel and sound judgement are mine; I have understanding and power, By me kings reign and rulers make laws that are just; by me princes govern, and all nobles who rule on earth. I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. (Proverbs 8: 14-17)

Prayer for our political system: Pray for an effective Christian presence and influence in political debate. Pray for the ‘pulling down of strongholds’ in our society that are contrary to God’s will. Pray that God’s people will continue to grow in faith, influence, and numbers in all of the main political parties.

Does God care about Government? Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he sets up kings and deposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. (Daniel 2: 20-21)

Prayer for our government: Pray for righteousness and integrity; that our Government will act in accordance with God’s will. Pray for wisdom for the Prime Minister, the cabinet, and leading civil servants. Pray for Christians working in the various government departments; that God will use them as positive influence and a powerful witness.

What role can the Church play? If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7: 14)

Prayer for our churches: Pray for a wise, bold, and sensitive Christian engagement in local and national politics. Pray for unity of purpose and harmony of voice between different church streams. Pray for churches to see politics as an important ‘mission field’, and for young people to catch the vision and get involved.

A closing prayer: LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O LORD. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy. (Habakkuk 3:2)
