CSE 3 Fluency in Information Technology Michelle Christiana Lee University of CA, San Diego Computational Thinking- This course seeks to promote the enhancement of problem solving skills and computer technology skills, while also exposing one to HTML, Javascript, Alice by Carnegie Mellon, and Microsoft programs, such as Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. Calendar sample posted online. It is comprised of HTML coding for background color, table with table data, and interactive links. LEFT: Index for all completed projects for CSE 3. RIGHT: The contents of this page resemble components featured in resumes. The graphic is meant to represent oneself and an objective. The link at the top leads to the index pictured in the left. Microsoft Word contains many features which make page layout formatting more time efficient for users. It includes Table of Contents templates, item list functions, caption templates, and the ability to embed graphics. Features such as Paste with Unformatted Text allow users to paste items as seem on other pages. Applying organizational and formatting skills to projects Microsoft Excel has features that can input data into tables and graphs. Below, there are samples of a graph which includes profit performance and a pie chart that features the same information but in different form. Both are great tools for comparing information. This program is useful for budgeting for personal and occupational ventures. Programs utilized to formulate webpages using HTML include: Notepad ++ and Secure File Transfer Client. Using HTML to formulate webpages, includes the following HTML functions: o Formulating appropriate HTML skeleton o HTML tags o Table and table data o Anchor tags, style type formatting in head tags, embedding links in table cells, placing graphics using HTML o Directory hierarchy, to refer to files Alice by Carnegie Mellon features the following: o Animation, which can move and be controlled by coding o Objects, characters/items shown in animation o Camera views o Methods – groupings of coding o Method actions are formatted to be executed in order, individual or Do It Together options, nested loops, loops executed according to Boolean conditions, continuous loops, or by single loops o Action direction and duration settings o Number and Boolean settings BELOW: The clock starts at 12 hours and 0 seconds and commence to tick at the speed of a real clock. Actions were attributed to minuteHand, hourHand, and secondHand.Methods. BOTTOM Right: This is the method and loops of parameters attributed to the Clock. It shows at which loops certain hands execute their tasks and how long they wait to execute or how many actions they do. TOP Right: The graphic of frogs in a pond is a screenshot of a scene in a short movie made with Alice LEFT: BlackJack game with interactive buttons & alerts. RIGHT: Triton Shirt Menu, resembles online shopping. Contains interactive buttons and total price alerts. JavaScript can be used within HTML coding and applied to webpages. JavaScript is more interactive with users than HTML on its own. Functions include: o JavaScript is included in HTML in a JavaScript tags within the head tag o Variables, onclick interactive buttons, alerts o Functions with if/else statements to dictate action of interactive functions Making information Available to the World with HTML & Webpages Visual Programming with Alice PowerPoint can also include images and charts from other sources such as Excel. The pie chart was made in Excel and featured in a PowerPoint slide about stock performance.
