Diseases Associated with Smoking and Chewing Tobacco Lung Cancer: 9 out of 10 caused by smoking Mouth, Head and Neck Cancer from chewing or smoking tobacco Lung Diseases: Cardiac Pulmonary Obstructive Disease (COPD) and Emphysema Heart Disease that cause Heart Attacks

Smoking CAUSES CANCER AND DEATH On average, smokers die 13 to 14 years earlier than nonsmokers. Poisons in tobacco are absorbed through the skin in the mouth and through the lungs, causing lung and mouth cancer. Tar from tobacco use accumulates in the lungs causing emphysema, which causes you to slowly suffocate. Second hand smoke causes the same problems as actually smoking the cigarette.

SUFFOCATING while ALIVE Smoking causes slow suffocation Tars and Poisons in Tobacco kill the lung tissue The body doesn’t get the oxygen it needs The blood vessels get narrow The kidney and bladder are washed with poisons The heart is over worked Even WALKING IS HARD TO DO because the smoker CANNOT BREATHE VIDEO:

Try This: CAN YOU BREATHE??? Cut a 3 inch part of a drinking straw for EACH PERSON FIRST: Run in place for 1 minute SECOND: Put the straw in mouth and breathe only through the straw. DO NOT BREATHE THROUGH THE NOSE. THIRD: Bite gently on the straw as you try to breathe to simulate an even more severe case of emphysema LAST: Resume normal breathing without the straw Questions: How did you feel breathing through the straw? Did you gulp air? People with emphysema never get that gulp.

HOW MUCH TAR IS INHALED INTO LUNGS IN ONE YEAR if smoke ONE PACK PER DAY ?????? Pour molasses slowly into a tall, thin, clear container. When should we stop pouring?????? ( 1 cup) What if the person smoked 2 packs per day??? (2 cups)

Lung Tissue: How does it FEEL after SMOKING? HEALTHY LUNG TISSUE: FEEL a damp, soft sponge DAMAGED LUNG TISSUE: FEEL A dry, hard sponge. QUESTION: Why is hardened lung tissue a problem?

Summary and Discussion Have you ever considered smoking? Have you ever smoked? Now what do you think???
