Society of College, National and University Libraries Overview of, and update on the current SCONUL strategy review process CAUL Brisbane September 2005

Society of College, National and University LibrariesAgenda SCONUL’s strategic direction/ framework and development programme Includes info on some areas of interest to CAUL

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 1 : Develop a new planning framework Introducing a strategic planning framework to: –Bring consistency to articulating and communicating strategic themes/aims/goals –Offer a clear action plan to members including timelines and identified person(s) responsible –Differentiate areas of strategic importance, and where we are developing thinking, from the ‘bread and butter’ of mutual support and good practice –Help with clear communication with members and bodies we wish to influence/collaborate with (see below)

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 2 : Develop influencing, partnership & collaboration strategy (1) Developing strategy to become (and be perceived as) a more strategic organisation Building on the existing strategic aim/role of influencing, partnership and collaboration Concentrating initially on the articulation of SCONUL’s role in relation to that of key bodies already identified

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 2 : Develop influencing, partnership & collaboration strategy (2) 3 examples of interest… (1) Working with CILIP for the library and information profession in higher education and the national libraries on policy development and professional support for staff, The two associations have many common interests - for example, lobbying for better dissemination of scientific research results, using library resources to support e- learning, research in information, and supporting the role of the national libraries.

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 2 : Develop influencing, partnership & collaboration strategy (3) (2) a new collaborative project with the Higher Education Academy which builds on our work in relation to e-learning and information literacy and which signals the start of a long-term relationship between the two organisations. First mutual project is a jointly commissioned literature review –relating to the impact of information literacy strategies, policies and practices, and the use of information resources, on the student learning experience. –intended to provide a basis for practitioners, policy makers and researchers to adopt more evidence-informed approaches on matters relating to the quality of the student learning experience.

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 2 : Develop influencing, partnership & collaboration strategy (4) (3) Key stakeholder in the new Research Information Network –RIN is to provide financial support and joint badging for an enhanced SCONUL Research Extra (reciprocal access and borrowing) scheme to other research bodies. It could even be extended to Australian academics visiting the UK and Ireland! –SCONUL will be asked for nominees for the LIS consultative group and for suitable subject librarians to join the discipline groups

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 3 : Review current SCONUL structures – Groups (1) AGM 2005 has approved report on review, refresh, re- structure of Advisory Committees, and other groups, so as to improve effectiveness Implementation advanced, including –transitioning existing groups –new groups being set up –new work plans for 2005 have been drawn up –agendas and membership supported by EB. In addition, constitutional changes approved by AGM 2005

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 3 : Review current SCONUL structures – Groups (2) Chair to initiate 2 nd phase of review of groups in Autumn 2005 in good time for AGM 2006 –Scholarly communication (joint with CURL) –Communication and marketing –Health strategy The task to improve communication with members about group activities remains a critical issue.

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 4 : Develop a new financial strategy (1) New financial strategy formally adopted by AGM 2005; predicated upon increasing income levels and simultaneously reducing certain designated areas of expenditure. Substantive changes included: –Initial levy to support strategic developments –New subscription methodology (no longer flat fee) –Growing the membership base, including corporate members –Strategic approach to sponsorship, external funding sources, Conference exhibitions

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 4 : Develop a new financial strategy (2) New activity now incorporated into Secretariat, EB and group action plans as appropriate 2 key projects identified with membership input –Impact/VFM –Marketing and website development Review of central costs underway Review of risk management underway

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 5 : Revise Executive Board operations Group in place to review EB operations, modus operandi and costs –Report due Oct 2005 This review will enable articulation of priorities for the EB in line with strategic fit of groups, so as to define how it can best support SCONUL in achieving its aims and support it in strategy development and implementation

Society of College, National and University Libraries STRATEGIC ACTION # 6 : Develop strategy for the Secretariat (1) This review will enable articulation of priorities for the Secretariat so as to define how it can best support SCONUL in achieving its aims and support it in strategy development and implementation Revise Secretariat operations including modus operandi and costs Report from external consultant due Feb 2006
