Direct School Admission - Secondary Exercise (DSA-Sec) For the DSA-Sec Exercise, students’ talents and achievements in both academic and non-academic areas will determine if they will be selected for direct admission into a secondary school. Each school has its own merit-based academic and non-academic criteria for selection. These are based on the qualities, such as talent in science, music or sports, that the school would like to emphasise. To assess these qualities in applicants, schools may conduct tests, interviews or trials as necessary.

Direct School Admission - Secondary Exercise (DSA-Sec) Rationale: To give schools greater flexibility in their admission of students to allow a more diverse range of student achievements and talents to be recognised. PSLE students have a choice of whether or not to participate in this exercise. If they choose to participate in DSA-Sec, they should be aware of the procedures. If they choose not to, they can continue to gain admission to secondary schools through the usual centralised Secondary One Posting Exercise.

Direct School Admission Process Selection Stage ( Late June to Early Sept) Apply directly to school (s) Attend interview/test/camp to assess applicants Will be given confirmed offer or put on a waiting list or not successful Sit for the PSLE (mid Oct) Exercise School Preference Stage (Late Oct) Students to indicate their preferences Results Stage (Late November) -Results of the DSA Exercise will release together with the release of the PSLE results Secondary One Option Exercise (Late November) - The S1 Option Exercise will be conducted for all PSLE candidates immediately after the release of the PSLE results. Pupils are to indicate their 6 secondary school choices during the exercise.

DSA information http:/www.moe.gov.sg/esp/schadm/dsa_sec/ -DSA Homepage -Participating Schools -DSA flowcharts -Frequently Asked Questions

Results of the DSA Exercise A student who indicates his preference for a school which had given him a Confirmed Offer will be guaranteed a place in the school, provided that he is eligible of a course (eg Express) which is offered by the school. Successful applicants will not be allowed to make any school choices during the Secondary One Posting Exercise.

Results of the DSA Exercise Unsuccessful DSA applicants or pupils who do not participate in the DSA Exercise must indicate their school choices (exercise 6 choices) in the Secondary One Posting Exercise by submitting their S1 Option Form through their primary schools or via the S1 internet System. These pupils will be able to opt for their preferred schools, including the schools that had not been able to offer them a place under the DSA Exercise.

Student Selection Each school has its own merit-based criteria for selection (academic and non-academic criteria), based on the qualities that the school would like to emphasise. The participating secondary schools conduct selection exercises, which might include trials, interviews of tests, to assess applicants.

Gathering Information on Schools Student obtains information on DSA-Sec schools, such as niche areas, selection criteria, dates of trials / tests / interviews, etc, through the following: Checking the schools’ websites, Calling the schools, and / or Visiting the schools

Considerations when making decision Last year’s posting aggregate ranges of the schools Academic performance of the child Distance Affiliated schools Programmes and schemes offered Special needs/interests of the child

Important points Parents and their child attend the schools’ open houses. Know what the schools are offering, the electives, the programmes for the gifted learners, the culture of the school, the CCA programme, etc. Do discuss with your child of the choices

Special Note NUSHS does not participate in the S1 Posting Exercise. Interested pupils may apply directly to the school through DSA Exercise or through application (after the release of PSLE results).
