4 Present Education Pathways Structure
University (3 – 4 years) GCE A-Level/Other Qualifications Since the introduction of our Ability-Based, Aspirations-Driven model of education in 1997, the education structure has become quite different. As you can see from the diagram shown here, more educational pathways are now available. In primary schools, the previous model of ability-based streaming in Primary 5 and 6 has been replaced with the system of subject-based banding. This enables students with uneven strengths to learn at their own pace for each subject, either at a foundation or standard level. For secondary education, there are other options now such as the Integrated Programme Schools, Specialised Independent Schools, Specialised Schools and Privately-Funded Schools, that cater to students of different aptitudes and interest. I will elaborate on these schools in the next slide. While there is still streaming into different courses (Express, Normal (Academic), Normal (Technical)), there is more porosity, and students can transfer laterally from one course to another if they perform well. To reduce the emphasis on examinations, we have also introduced the Direct School Admission Exercise. This gives our schools and tertiary education institutions the flexibility to admit students based on their achievements and talents in areas which are not captured by our national examinations, while maintaining meritocracy across the system. Alternative Qualifications Poly (3 years) JC (2 years) ITE (2 years) GCE O-Level/N-Level IP Schools (4 – 6 years) Secondary Schools (4 – 5 years) Specialised Independent Schools (4 – 6 years) Specialised Schools (4 years) Privately-Funded Schools (4 – 6 years) Special Education Primary School Leaving Examination Primary School (6 years)

6 Information on Junior Colleges
Prepare students by equipping them with the skills and knowledge required for universities or institutes of higher learning in Singapore and abroad Offers the A-Level Curriculum Choice of subject combinations with subjects offered at three levels of study – Higher 1 (H1), Higher 2 (H2) and Higher 3 (H3) The H2 is equivalent to the GCE A-level subjects offered prior to 2006 Great e Premier School, Serving Community

7 Admission Criteria to Junior Colleges
Aggregate range for L1R5 < 20 points* 2) Pass in English Language (A1 – C6) *The lower the better; excludes bonus points Great e Premier School, Serving Community

10 Information on Polytechnics
A polytechnic education gives students a hands-on experience within a dynamic and progressive learning environment Five polytechnics in Singapore offering market-driven courses, which lead students to fulfilling careers, as well as preparing them for further studies One of the features of polytechnic education is the strong emphasis on practice-based learning Great e Premier School, Serving Community

11 Admission Criteria to Polytechnics
Aggregate range for ELR2B2 < 26 points* ELR2B2 refers to: English Language 2 relevant subjects for the polytechnic course applied for 2 other best subjects which could be elective subjects *includes CCA bonus points and meet minimum entry requirements of the courses Great e Premier School, Serving Community

12 Pathways for N(A) Students
Poly Foundation Programme (PFP) ELMAB3 ≤ 11 Subject-specific minimum entry requirements Top 10% of cohort DES-to-Poly Programme (DPP) ELMAB3 ≤ 19 Top 11% – 30% of cohort Sec 5NA Grade 5 or better for all subjects used in computation Great e Premier School, Serving Community

13 Pathways for N(A) Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP)
A one-year foundation programme for polytechnic- bound students offering a practice-oriented curriculum taught by polytechnic lecturers. PFP students are given provisional places in diploma programmes, subject to them passing all modules in the one-year PFP.

14 Pathways for N(A) Direct-Entry-Scheme to Polytechnic (DPP)
Students accepted into the DPP will enrol into Higher Nitec courses at ITE, and are subsequently guaranteed a place in a polytechnic diploma course mapped to their Higher Nitec, subject to them meeting the Grade Point Average (GPA) requirements. For engineering courses, outstanding students who meet the GPA requirements can be admitted into 2nd year of polytechnic course.

19 Home-School Partnership
Making Informed Decisions Together Know your child’s strengths, interests, learning styles and passion Discuss with your child his/her career aspirations Consider the type of learning environment (eg. applied learning) that will be more suited for your child’s learning style, strengths Research on the academic and non-academic entry requirements of the school/course that your child is keen on and whether it will help him/her achieve his/her career aspirations Premier School, Serving Community

20 Home-School Partnership
Ensure an appropriate study environment for the child. Reinforce good study habits and attitudes. Facilitate homework completion, not teach content. Parents are not expected to be content experts. Premier School, Serving Community
