1 Welcome to P6 Parents’ Briefing
Friday 12 January 2018 Seminar Room FIRST TOA PAYOH PRIMARY SCHOOL School Philosophy : Every Child Matters and Deserves an Education

2 PSLE Matters - Secondary 1 Posting - Direct School Admission (DSA)

3 PSLE - a placement exam Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as far as possible into a school of their choice Places students into different courses according to their academic ability - Express / Normal Academic / Normal Technical Need to reflect the relative achievement level of students among their peers

4 PSLE GRADES (STANDARD SUBJECTS)
Mark Range Descriptors A* ≥91 Has very good understanding of the subject A Has good understanding of the subject B C Has adequate understanding of the subject D Has fair understanding of the subject E Has elementary understanding of the subject U < 20 Has not met the requirement for the minimum grade

5 PSLE GRADES (FOUNDATION SUBJECTS)
Mark Range Descriptors G1 ≥85 Is very good in the subject at the foundation level G2 Is good in the subject at the foundation level G3 Has an adequate grasp of the subject at the foundation level G4 Has an elementary grasp of the subject at the foundation level U < 30 Has not met the requirement at the foundation level for the minimum grade

6 Susan H U R R A Y ! I scored 85% in both English Language and
Chinese Language ! Susan Let us now look at Susan who scored 85% in both English Language and Chinese Language. The question is has Susan done equally well in EL and CL ? Has Susan done equally well in EL and CL ?

7 Susan scores 85% in both EL and CL
Her performance in CL is very close to that of other students 85% EL EL ave = 60 CL CL ave = 80 She did much better in EL as compared to other students Susan scores 85% in both EL and CL The average score for CL is 80. Hence her CL score of 85 is very close to that of other students The average score for EL is much lower at 60. Susan’s EL score of 85 is very much better than that of other students. Hence we can san Susan has done better in EL than CL. 100

8 Transformed Score or T-Score
The raw score obtained in the exam only shows how good the student is in that subject, not how good he is as compared to others So there is a need for standardisation of the raw scores So there is a need for standardisation of the raw scores by transforming raw score to T-Score. Transformed Score or T-Score 8

9 What is T – Score ? It gives the relative position of a student’s performance as compared to the performance of all the other students in that subject

10 T-Score EL MT ave = 60 85% 85% ave = 80 50
Converts average mark of each subject to a common score of 50 points. Converts other marks taking into consideration the extent to which they differ from the average and the size of spread of the marks around the average Converts average mark of each subject to a common score of 50 points. Converts other marks taking into consideration the extent to which they differ from the average and the size of spread of the marks around the average

11 How is T – Score calculated for each subject?
(X - Y) T = 50 + 10 Z where X: student’s mark for the subject Y: average mark (mean) scored by all students Z: spread of marks around the average mark (standard deviation)

12 What is PSLE Aggregate Score? the total of T-Score for all 4 subjects

13 185 For example : Student Jane’s PSLE Results Subject Total Mark
T-Score EL 200 105 34 CL 152 51 Maths 100 67 53 Science 58 47 PSLE Aggregate Score : 185

14 Rank all students by their
SECONDARY ONE POSTING Rank all students by their PSLE Aggregate Scores 265 258 246 230 and below Posting By Merit : I will now share briefly with you, the Sec 1 Posting Method. Basically, after the PSLE scripts have been marked and scored, each candidate will be given his PSLE aggregate Score. All candidates will be ranked by their PSLE scores, that t is according to merit.

15 SECONDARY ONE POSTING 285 284 243 A B C By Choice
3rd 4th 5th 6th A 284 B There are many other pupils ranked above Pupil C Candidate with the highest score will take his pick, followed by the candidate with the next highest score. This process is repeated. By the time it comes to the candidate with the 243 score, all his first 5 choices would have been taken. Hence he will be posted to his 6th choice school. It is also possible that by the time it is his turn to choose a school, all his 6 school of choice have been completely taken up by other candidates with better score. 243 C FULL

16 For example : 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th Susan Aggregate- 260 Sch A Sch B
Sch C Sch D Sch E Sch F Joy Aggregate- 246 Alex Aggregate- 222 Sch X Sch Y Sch Z Lucy Aggregate- 190 Let me take you through another example : We have 4 students, Susan, Joy, Alex & Lucy. They are ranked accordingly to their PSLE Aggregate Scores. Each student’s order of choice of school is also as indicated.

17 HOW IS YOUR CHILD POSTED?
COP: Cut-off point Sch A 300 vac Sch B 250 vac Sch C 320 vac Sch D Sch E 360 vac Sch F 1. Merit Susan: 1st choice - Sch A nd choice - Sch B 3rd choice - Sch C X COP 250 2. Choice COP 240 Joy: st choice - Sch A nd choice - Sch C 3rd choice - Sch B X COP 230 Alex: 1st choice - Sch C nd choice - Sch E 3rd choice - Sch D COP 220 X COP 210 3. Places available Susan has an aggregate score of 260 and her first choice is School A with a cut off point of 250. Susan is able to secure a place in School A. Joy has an aggregate score of and her first choice is School A with a cut off point of 250. Joy is not able to secure a place in School A based on cut off point. Her second choice is School C with a cut off point of 230. Joy will be able to secure a place in School C. Joy’s third choice is School B with a cut off point of 240 and which is higher than School C. However, she will not be posted to School B because she has been given her second choice school. Likewise for Alex. He has an aggregate score of 222. He is not able to secure a place in School C which has a cut off point of He is given his second choice school, School E which has a cut off point of Although he qualifies for School D with a cut off point of 220, he his given his second choice. Lucy doe not meet the cut off pont for her 6 choices. She will be posted manually by MOE. Lucy: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th choice-Sch A,B,C,D & E 6th choice-Sch F COP 200 Unposted student

18 If a child could not get into any of the schools in the 6 choices….
Manually Posted by MOE Group Postal District Postal District Postal Sector In this case, she will be manually posted by the Pupil Placement Section in MOE based on her postal address and availability of places in schools in which she meets the cut off points. Hence the 6 schools that your child is opting for, must be realistic and aligned to his PSLE result.

19 CHOOSING SECONDARY SCHOOL
