Creative Movements ECE: Art, Music, and Language Arts

Goin’ Fishin’ Set the scene for a fishing trip. Move freely in doing: Casting out reeling in pretend to be a fish (on the hook, and a free swimming) Fly fishing Frying and eating the fish Be the worm Be out on the boat- windy, stormy, lots of waves *page 388 in text with additions *No materials needed

“Become” something Have the children act out the features/characteristics of a: bicycle Rake Hose Wheelbarrow Tire pump Beach ball Swing set Hula hoop Car Give each child a chance to pick what they are becoming. *examples taken from page 389 in text *No materials needed

Jack in the box Suggest a game of “jack in the box” to children. Say, “wind yourself down and shut the door- then pop up on the count of four. Make your own music white winding yourself down” Continue the movement experience buy asking the children to stretch slowly like a rubber band and then snap back quickly. Say, “quickly twist yourself into a know; then slowly stretch your elbow to the ceiling and untie the knot” *page 390 in text *No materials needed

Yes, Lets This is a silly, fun game. The group stand in the pace waiting for someone to call out, “Lets all prevent to try on hats (or any suggestion). The group then responds with YES! LETS! And the group pretends to try on hats until someone suggest something else. (For 4 and 5 year olds I would have the teacher call on a student to choose next) *page 392 in text *No materials needed

Water Have the children “be” water: Dripping Flooding Freezing Melting Slipping A sprinkler Misting Sprinkling Raining Pooring Drying out Also could have “rain” music in the background, I am thinking soothing nature sounds some people listen to to go to sleep easier or to relax. *Page 388 in text with some additions *CD of nature sounds

Play many times of music including classical, tribal, jazz, country, popular, opera, blues and more. Play each track for 30 or more seconds, allowing the children to express and interpret, through movement, what they believe the music is "saying" to them. Cut crepe paper streams or pieces of ribbon to about 3 feet long and give one to each child. Show the children how to hold one end of the ribbon in one had and hold it up high. Then turn on some music and let them dance and twirl their streamers in the air. On different days provide different types of music, both fast and slow. You can even tie two colors of ribbon together for holiday- themed ribbon dancing. Think orange and black for Halloween or pink and red for Valentine's Day. The crepe paper provides a cheap way for ribbons. Streamer and Ribbon Dancing Source: movement-lessons-preschool.html *Materials: Music CD Cepe paper Straws to glue them to for a handle if desired. ribbons

Play music to dance and move around however they choose. Then stop the music. When it stops, everyone has to freeze until the music starts again. -there is a fun “freeze dance” specific song Freeze Dance movement-lessons-preschool.html *Music CD

Stretchy Shapes Have the children move freely with this stretchy band to different types of music, suggesting to “be” a square, triangle, circle, etc. Stretchies: 4″ X 90″ swimsuit lycra sewn in a circle (measurements depend on fabirc stretchiness) *Materials needed

Free Movement on Bubble Wrap This requires a large amount of bubble wrap. Have the children do free movement after covering the floor with bubble wrap. The children will be able to hear the different sounds of bubble wrap to the different movements they are making. Different types of music, fast, slow, what happens if they sit? Kneel? Lay down? How many different ways can they pop the bubbles? With what different body parts? *Materials needed: Music CD Lots of bubble wrap!

Group Movement For this group movement I would have different types of music playing. This will allow children to do free movement, but also be aware of how their friends are moving and what reaction they have if their friend does a certain movement. *Materials: group movement band
