Hot work permit

Objectives . Understand why a Hot Work program is needed . Recognize the essential components . How to manage a Hot Work program and Responsibilities . When to post a Fire Watch

Hot Work Program Hot work permit is issued when using an open flame or heat that could ignite materials: . Welding . Burning . Brazing . Propane Soldering . Oxyacetylene Cutting . Grinding Metals

Components of a Hot Work Program A Hot Work Program typically includes the following: . A document of procedure . Hot work permit use and application . Trained employees and contractors involved . Ongoing review and monitoring of the program

Written Procedure A written procedure should be developed by the shift lead or the control room operator to: . Establish the goal . Designate roles and responsibilities . Document steps so hot work can be performed safely . Review the understanding and train everyone involved . Make sure permit is filled out correctly and filed once work is complete

Hot Work Permit The Permit lists all the requirements and understandings: . Remove all combustibles materials away 35 feet or more. If can’t remove, use a fire blanket to cover . . Atmospheric analysis result if necessary . Fire alarms, and fire extinguishers locations . If a fire watch is needed . Wind direction if necessary .Flammables in trenches near by

Atmospheric Test Work must be discontinued: . If the alarm sounds. . If the LEL is greater than 50 . If oxygen is less than 19.5% . If oxygen is greater than 23.5%

Fire Watch When to post a fire watch: . When combustibles located within 35 ft can’t be removed . When wall or flooring combustibles are within 35 ft radius . When it is deemed necessary by the shift lead or control room operator

Fire Watch Responsibilities The responsibilities of a fire watch are as follows: . Monitor the site at all times and 30mins after work is complete . Sound alarm if there is a fire . Fight the fire only to the capacity of the equipment being used . Remove any tape when work is done . Notify the control room or supervisor that work is complete.

Control Room/ Facility Manager Once work is finished the control room/ manager of the facility should take appropriate actions: . Complete work is done and so is permit . Shall also file permit for records and further review

Please refer to CSP Safety and environmental manual for detailed and updated information and forms for “ CSP Hot Work Procedure”. Physical copies in control room, front office and electronic copy in drop box.
