2. Hot Work Permit Why are we here?

Country & Account For 5% Of All Fires
• An Air Force Required Program Used To
Ensure People Are Aware Of The Hazards
Associated With Open Flame And Other
High Temperature Processes.

4. Hot Work Permit Definition:
Hot Work: Any work involving burning, welding, or similar operations that is capable
of initiating fires or explosions.

8. Hot Work Permit • Permits are issued for the specific job
being done, and or a specific area/work
zone.
• The time period is usually for the working
When crews change a new permit
must be issued.

9. Hot Work Permit • A single permit can be issued for up to 30
days but a site safety inspection MUST be
accomplished by the PAI for each welding operation each day or when there is a crew
change .

11. Operating Precautions
Gas cylinders
Will be stored in an upright position
Never use acetylene at a pressure in excess of 15 pounds
Turn system off when not in use for 30 min or more
Do not turn acetylene more than three-fourths of a turn and leave wrench on handle

12. Operating Precautions
Ensure area is ventilated
When cutting or welding on pipes containing flammable or combustible materials or vapors ensure to inert the container or system first
Follow all applicable T.O.’S
Strict compliance to AFOSH 91-5

13. Operating Precautions
Never weld or heat material on a concrete floor
Keep area neat and clean
Do not perform cutting and welding
In buildings with installed sprinkler systems that are inoperable unless other means of detection, reporting and extinguishing have been approved by the fire chief
In explosive atmospheres
Within 50ft of flammable liquids

14. Facilities
Where possible remove all combustibles within 35 feet of operation
Place warning signs to prevent personnel from being inadvertently exposed to welding hazards
Combustible floors will be kept wet, covered with damp sand or protected by a fire resistant shield
Have LB fully charged operable ABC extinguisher on hand

Where welding or cutting is to be done within 3ft of a sprinkler head it will be protected
Fire watch is required
If there is a possibility of activating the Fire detection system it is the responsibility of the PAI to notify the alarm shop to safety the system during the operation

16. Personal Protective Equipment
Ensure all safety PPE is OSHA std 29CFR and AFOSH compliant

17. Training and Qualifications
Each PAI will receive certification prior to being authorized to issue hot permits
Each person performing welding operations will be qualified to perform that operation

18. Aircraft and Missile welding
All AC and Missile welding will be done by a certified welder IAW T.O
Follow the provided check list safety

23. Hot Work Permit
• The Fire Inspector or “Permit Authorizing Individual” PAI has the responsibility to verify that all necessary precautions have been taken at welding site and to ensure site safety inspections for each site is accomplished each day.

Sprinkler systems must remain in service in the hot work area, unless approved by the Fire Prevention Office.

26. Hot Work Permit Necessary Precautions Fire Watch
O Fire watch will be provided during and for at least
30 minutes after work, and during any coffee or
lunch breaks.
O Fire watch is supplied with two serviceable dry
chemical extinguishers.
O Fire watch is trained in use of this equipment and in
sounding alarm.

27. Hot Work Permit What are your responsibilities in the event of a fire?

28. Hot Work Permit The Fire Watch may not do other jobs which
detract from their primary responsibility.
The Fire Watch must be trained to use the fire
extinguisher.
The Fire Watch must be aware of how to
report emergencies and in emergency evacuation
procedures.
The Fire Watch must be identified and their
qualifications verified, before permits are issued.

Necessary Precautions
CAN THE JOB BE AVOIDED?
IS THERE A SAFER WAY?
Before beginning any hot work, ask yourself if the work can be done a safer way. Hot work is very hazardous and should be avoided if not absolutely necessary.

30. Hot Work Permit
Before leaving the area for the day, verify that no smoldering fires have developed within walls, cracks in floors, or in ceiling areas where you have been working. If required, you must perform an after operation inspection.

31. Summary • Hot Work permits must be issued by the PAI’s or Fire
Inspector before work begins.
• Permits are issued for a specific job, for a specific time frame,
to a specific person.
• All necessary equipment must be on site and in good working
order before work begins.
• A fire watch must be present for the duration of hot work and
for at least 30 minutes after work is done.
• An after operation inspection must be conducted by the person
doing the hot work before leaving the job site.
• Copies of permits must be turned into the Fire Prevention
Office.

32. Where to Get Help?
• Supervisor is responsible for all necessary equipment
and for contacting the Fire Alarm Maintenance, Fire
Alarm Communications Center, and Fire Prevention
Office.
• The Fire Prevention Office will issue all special
circumstance permits and answer any specific
questions about fire protection systems, fire
prevention measures, and precautions.
• The Safety Office or Bioenvironmental Engineer can
answer questions regarding other hazards, such
as vision hazards or fumes.
