Plant Needs  What do plants need to survive? sunlight water nutrients/minerals energy from food (made by the plant) enough soil to live and grow carbon dioxide  What happens if all of these needs are NOT met?

Staying Alive  Some plants have special features that help them get all they need to survive.  Adaptation- a special trait that helps an organism survive  Plants have adaptations for: getting food protection reproduction conserving, or saving, energy

Should I Stay or Should I Go?  Are trees dying when they lose their leaves? No, they’re just resting, or going into a dormant phase.  Dormant- when trees drop their leaves to save water and energy during the winter seasons.  Dormancy is an adaptation for conserving energy. 

Deciduous Trees: Just Can’t Decide  Deciduous- a type of tree that loses their leaves to conserve energy during the winter season  The trees stop making chlorophyll and the leaves turn back to their original colors.

Coniferous Trees: We Got Cones, But No Ice Cream  Coniferous- a type of tree that stays green all year and produces cones

Go To the Light!!!  Phototropism- the growth in which plants respond to light.  Plants will actually grow towards a light source. This is why plants grow up towards the sky.  This adaptation helps the plant get the light it needs to survive!

Go To the Light!!!! Check out these plants: all growing towards a light source.
