Do Now Write a word equation for photosynthesis Explain how carbon dioxide enters the leaf and name the parts of the leaf which control the entry of Carbon dioxide gas

Plant Respiration

3 Plant Respiration- Is the process of releasing this energy (photosynthesis) for plants to use. This means the food is broken down and used Glucose is made during photosynthesis and converted to starch. Plants need this energy for growth reproduction & life processes. Carbon dioxide is taken in by the Stomata cells Water vapour is released by the Stomata cells

4 Glucose (sugar) + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + energy Respiration Respiration -Is the process of releasing this energy for plants to use. The process is opposite to photosynthesis so the plant can grow

5 Plants perform photosynthesis during the day when there is sunlight, and their cells must always respire. Respiration is a reaction in which energy is released from sugar in the presence of oxygen. Photosynthesis and respiration are opposite reactions. In photosynthesis water and carbon dioxide are taken up, energy (sunlight) is needed, and sugar and oxygen are produced. In respiration sugar and oxygen are taken up, while carbon dioxide, water, and energy are the products. Respiration occurs at night as well

6 New plant matter is built up from carbohydrates. The energy comes from respiration & nutrients from the soil Photosynthesis using sunlight in the daytime has to produce enough sugar or starch as food reserves to allow the plant to respire both by day and night, as well as having some extra for growth. 1.Plants perform photosynthesis by day but not at night to make food 2.Plants are living things and so respire by day and night using up food to release energy for life processes 3.Photosynthesis usually results in a net food gain, once respiration has been accounted for. (plant will grow) 4.Plants that lose their leaves in winter (Deciduous trees) store enough food from photosynthesis produced during summer to last them over winter and provide energy reserves for new growth in spring.

7 Differences between Photosynthesis and Respiration. PhotosynthesisRespiration 1)produces food 2)stores energy 3)uses water 4)uses carbon dioxide 5)releases oxygen 6)occurs in sunlight 1)uses food 2)releases energy 3)produces water 4)produces carbon dioxide 5)uses oxygen 6)occurs in the dark as well as light
