Respiration is a reaction in which energy is released from sugar in the presence of oxygen. Photosynthesis and respiration are opposite reactions. In photosynthesis water and carbon dioxide are taken up, energy (sunlight) is needed, and sugar and oxygen are produced. In respiration sugar and oxygen are taken up, while carbon dioxide, water, and energy are the products. Respiration occurs at night as well
