Worm Bins Presentation by Spencer Myers

What is a Worm Bin? Decomposing food Bedding Material Worms Vermicompost (Vermicast & Compost)

Benefits of Worm Bins  Reduces household waste.  Produces a rich garden compost and recycles organic material back to the earth.  Breeds more worms for gardens, fishing or other worm bins.  It’s a fun activity for kids!

Worm Bins vs. Regular Compost Piles  Worm compost is 7 times richer in nutrients.  Worm bins require no turning or watering. The worms do all the work!

How to Set up a Worm Bin  Step 1: Find a bin (shoebox, bathtub).  Step 2: Find a place for the worm bin.  Step 3: Collect worm bedding (newspapers, paper egg cartons, cereal boxes).  Step 4: Shred the bedding materials.  Step 5: Collect kitchen scraps in another closed plastic container.

How to Set up a Worm Bin (continued)  Step 6: Alternate layers of bedding and worm food about ¼ of the way up the bin.  Step 7: Let the bin sit for a week, if possible.  Step 8: Add the worms.  Step 9: Keep a dry layer of bedding on the top.  Step 10: When chunks of food are gone, continue to add more food and bedding, until you have enough compost.
