ALASKA DEVELOPMENTAL PROFILE Department of Education & Early Development September 2012, District Test Coordinator Training

Overview of the Alaska Developmental Profile Aligned with Early Learning Guidelines Five Domains (Physical Well-Being, Health, and Motor Development; Social and Emotional Development; Approaches to Learning; Cognition and General Knowledge; Communication, Language, and Literacy) 13 Goals to be rated within those domains 2 Consistently Demonstrates 1 Progressing 0 Does Not Demonstrate 2 The Alaska Developmental Profile is required by state law as part of the statewide comprehensive system of student assessments, Sec

Example of Domain, Goal, Indicators 3 Domain: Approaches to Learning Goal: Shows curiosity and interest in learning new things and having new experiences Indicators: Engages in discussions and asks questions about new events and occurrences (e.g., Why did this happen?) Looks for new information and wants to know more about personal interests Uses familiar materials in new ways (e.g., materials from nature in an art project or for imaginative play)

Principles of Kindergarten Readiness Assessments* No high stakes Traits are not easily quantifiable Strong preferences for criterion-referenced, observational (children performing tasks that are part of their daily experiences) assessment in naturalistic settings repeated across time Multiple domains (measures of child development across at least 5 domains) Teachers should be used as assessors *from Developing and Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Statewide Kindergarten Readiness presentation, Samuel Meisels, President Erikson Institute, Student Assessment Conference, June
