Language Portfolios

On-LINE PORTFOLIOS

RA charter It is the belief of our founders that having foreign languages taught is not a sufficient goal, but rather having a quality foreign language program carefully designed and assessed with national standards and trainings. The school will look to the ACTFL, American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, for support of these objectives.

RA charter Students will participate in creating a Total Talent Portfolio, documenting personal goals and bi-weekly or monthly progress towards these goals in each of the core subjects, with some examples of student’s work for further communication with parents, homeroom teachers and specialty teachers. (Effectiveness Goal 3.a.)

RA charter Besides tests, Renaissance Academy will utilize the student portfolios to track student’s progress. This portfolio may include interviews, assignments, projects or other items that demonstrate students’ progress and mastery. Teachers will be encouraged to use a mastery- based rubric to help students learn to evaluate their own work when possible. (Section 4 – Comprehensive Program of Instruction)

RA charter Effectiveness goal #2 Provide a model Foreign Language Study Program to all grades, K-9.

RA charter Effectiveness Goal # 2 Specific Objectives (What will be measured?) In grades K-1, target language will be taught on an exposure level of 50 minutes and covering 4 words per week.

RA charter In grades 2-5 fluency will increase by devoting 30 minutes per day to target language study, with 2-3 sessions taught by endorsed language teacher within the homeroom classroom to facilitate collaboration of curricula.

RA charter And in grades 6-9 continued study of target language or a second/third choice of less commonly taught language will be done on the basis of minutes daily by endorsed language teacher

BASIC programs at the K-8 level: * FLEX (Foreign Language Experience or Exploratory) * FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) * Total Immersion (Entire curriculum taught in the Foreign language) * Dual Immersion (50% of the day taught in the foreign language) * Traditional Secondary (Daily language instruction for 50 minutes or 90 minutes on a rotating A/B day schedule)

Category I: Languages closely related to English such as French, Spanish, German, or Swahili Require class hours

Category II: Languages with significant linguistic and/or cultural differences from English Such as Hebrew, Russian, or Urdu Require 1,100 class hours

Category III: Languages which are quite difficult for native English speakers Such as Arabic, Japanese, Korean, or Chinese Require 2200 class hours (about half that time preferably spent studying in-country)

Renaissance Academy Hours 1 – 5 th grade students = maximum of 80 hours per year. 6 – 9 th grade students = maximum of 133 hours per year.

Novice and Intermediate levels of proficiency as measured by the ACTFL scale. Native-like pronunciation. Enhanced overall cognitive skills and academic performance. Exposure to a rich variety of cultures, beliefs and practices. Experiences that inspire a life-long love of languages and cultures.

RA charter Effectivenes Goal #2 Measurement Criteria 75% of sixth grade students will express proficiency in Spanish as measured by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL).

RA charter 100% of middle schoolers will be continuously enrolled in at least one language class.
