Pr e-Test Preparation – At least two weeks before finals Organize materials by subject. Meet with your teacher if unsure of what to study. Actually mark time on a calendar for classes, extra activities, meals, regular homework, final exam study times, breaks and SLEEP! Maintain good health habits and a regular routine. Avoid cramming. Begin a regular study schedule in 1 to 2 hour blocks. Study at least twice with distractions and practice redirecting your focus. Prioritize work according to importance. Plan a post-test reward.

The Day of the Test Maintain your normal routine If possible, do something relaxing just before the test Take care of restroom/snack needs before test time Bring all necessary tools for test (pencils, calculators, etc.) Don’t talk to friends about test material or preparation before or after the exam. While waiting for the test to begin…envision yourself testing with confidence.

During the Test Be seated, prepared and relaxed well before the exam begins. Think about the post-exam reward you promised yourself for a moment Expect there will be some distractions and know that you can redirect your focus if needed. Smile and wish someone good luck. It releases positive energy! Read all the instructions carefully and scan the entire test if possible. Do the easiest and/or highest value problems first. Keep a record questions you skip. Don’t dwell on questions, but don’t rush – pace yourself. If the time is running out, focus on the questions you feel you have the best chance of answering correctly and that carry the most weight. Look over the test when finished, but it is generally not wise to make changes unless you are confident in the change.

After the Test Remember to reward yourself after the test. Don’t discuss the test questions or answers with others. If you did well, review your preparation routine and make sure you repeat the process. If you didn’t do well, review your procedures to see what didn’t work and make a plan for change. You may want to set up a conference with the teacher to get tips that will help you in the future. You have control over how well you prepare!

Extra Tips for Test Anxiety It’s normal to find ways to avoid studying. Identify your avoidance strategies and be prepared to overcome them. Find a reward that is meaningful and treat yourself after a successful study session. Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, seated stretching and positive self-talk. Gain confidence by practicing these techniques during quizzes and chapter tests. Do not compare yourself with others. Your goal is to do your best. Eat well, exercise and get enough sleep. Strong health is a warrior against anxiety. Be sure all plans are in place to be on time, prepared and relaxed on test day.
