Developing Test Taking Skills Think ahead to get the grade

Begin with being prepared  Participate in every class period -Don’t be shy to answer questions -Utilize class discussion -Ask questions when you are confused!  KEEP UP WITH ASSIGNED READINGS !  Take attentive notes during class

Basic note-taking tips  Do not try to write everything down.  Listen for key words and summarize what the instructor is saying  Use abbreviations and develop your own shorthand  If the teacher writes something on the board-write it down!  Review your notes after class and fill in blanks while the lecture material is fresh on your mind.

TIME MANAGEMENT!  Make a study schedule to balance time between large projects, homework, exams, and your personal life.  Keep regular study hours every week at a time that works best for you.  Break up studying into several days so you don’t get overwhelmed and you will retain more information

Studying tips  Study in a comfortable and productive place  Make sure your study place is free from distractions and interruptions  Take short breaks during studying sessions  AVOID CRAMMING!  Review your notes before the test to refresh your mind

In addition to studying…  Ask your instructor what you can expect on the test  Use supplemental material if available.  Get a good night’s sleep before the exam  Go to your classroom early to secure “your” seat  Come with everything you need to take the test.

Essay exams  Read all the directions carefully before you begin  Look for key words like : compare, contrast, prove, or summarize to form the correct answer  Plan your time wisely  Jot down an outline for your answers  Proofread

A good essay answer:  Starts with a direct response to the question  Provides specific and general information  Is well thought-out  Sticks to the question asked and doesn’t veer off to another (un)related topic Remember an essay should demonstrate how well you can explain and support an idea, not just show what you know.

Multiple Choice Tests  Read all the directions carefully before you begin  Carefully read the question being asked  Try to think of the answer before you look at the choices  Budget your time-answer all the questions you know first  Skip questions you are unsure of and return later  When unsure on a question try to eliminate choices you know are wrong before picking your answer  Finish the test-do not leave any items blank.

Problem-Solving Tests  This type of test involves formulas and making calculations  Do several practice problems before you take the test  Memorize formulas  Write down the formulas on your test as soon as you start.

 Before your test, remind yourself of the hard work you have put into studying  Eating well and being well rested the day of the test will help you feel your best  Remember you have studied to learn, not just memorize. This mindset will help squash self- doubt. Stay Positive
