Reading a Mystery What comes to mind when you hear the word mystery? What is your favorite mystery book, movie, or TV program? What do you think makes a good mystery?

What is a mystery? Something that is difficult to explain or understand. Mysteries are also stories where a problem, crime, or puzzle must be solved. Mysteries often contain secrets or hidden qualities that must be solved.

Elements of a Mystery Characters Setting Clues Distractions Plot

Solving a mystery involves… Inductive reasoning (or induction) –Moving from a set of specific facts to an inferred conclusion For example, All sheep that I have seen are white Therefore, many sheep must be white

Solving a mystery involves… Deductive Reasoning (or deduction) –starts with a general rule, which we know to be true, then from that rule, we draw an accurate conclusion. –This is how algebra applies to English For example, The baseball coach knows the opposing batter hits fast-balls well, so she instructs her pitcher not to throw a fast-ball
