The Space Race The race to space between America and the Soviet Union By Lee Treadwell 4/24/08

How it started Wernher von Braun was a former Nazi who worked for Hitler on the missile project. Sergei Korlev was a Soviet prisoner. Braun went to America. They both were working on the space race.

The Soviet Leads October 4 th 1957 Sputnik I was launched giving the Soviet Union the lead America was afraid the Soviet Union Would attack them from space.

First Animal In Space On November 3rd 1957 Sputnik II was launched holding a dog named Laika. This set another record for the Soviets.

Soviets Win Again On April 12 th 1960 cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin went into space and history as the first man in space. The Soviets were winning greatly.

Other Records The soviet kept winning in things like first space walk and first unmanned vehicle on the moon. The Americans were quickly gaining.

America Wins! On July 20 th 1969 We got ahead and won the Space Race by putting a person on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission.

How it impacts us Due to the brave efforts of Werhner von Braun we are now able to go to space to do things like launch satellites and explore space.
