Presentation transcript:

That's Good News! Heb. 3 Context: Israel on the brink of the Promised land Num. 13:1, 14:26-35 All but two died in the wilderness.

That's Good News! God told them obedience would bring victory over their enemies; a land flowing with milk and honey Ex. 3:8; Dt. 28

That's Good News! The ultimate reward? The Kingdom and their Messiah. That was their "good news"

That's Good News! But... Israel didn't believe God, so Israel didn't obey God...even Moses Num. 12:7-12 Notice: Heb. 3:18-19

That's Good News! Heb. 3:7-11 Since they didn't believe God, Psalm 95 tells us they missed His "rest".

That's Good News! They missed the reward of the Kingdom on earth. Though we know some entered heaven Matt. 17

That's Good News! Entering the Kingdom was simple John 3:1-5, Reward in the Kingdom was earned Dt. 28 Both are still true.

That's Good News! Heb. 3:12-19 The writer was concerned that these believers (3:1) would stop believing and stop obeying like Israel. When we stop believing God, we stop obeying God.

That's Good News! Heb. 4:1 Keep it in context! Like Israel, we "come short" when we stop believing and don't obey.

That's Good News! Heb. 4:2 "Gospel" = "good news" A good word with baggage. We read our day back into their day.

That's Good News! What "good news" was told them? What did they not believe? They did not believe God was willing and able to bring them the reward He promised.

That's Good News! The did not believe the good news of the Kingdom. The good news of the Kingdom is nothing less than God's part in the Mosaic Covenant. Dt

That's Good News! Malachi 4:4-6 The last thing Israel heard for 400 years. The next thing they heard was...

That's Good News! Matthew 3:1-2 John the Baptist Cf. Luke 1:16-17

That's Good News! What was the message called? Mark 1:14-15 "the good news of the Kingdom" And, after John was imprisoned...

That's Good News! Matt. 4:12, 17...Jesus picked up John's message. Notice: Mt. 4:23 calls it, "the gospel (good news) of the Kingdom"

That's Good News! So, the good news from God can cover different things. Certainly, the message that saves us from hell is good news.

That's Good News! But, the good news is more than that.

That's Good News! Galatians: The gospel that justifies you is the gospel that brings growth; stand firm in it!

I. Salutation and Greeting (1:1-5). II. Theme: Don’t let anyone move you from Paul’s Gospel (1:6-10). III. Paul’s life and ministry proves that his gospel is the true gospel (1:11–2:10). IV. The Galatians’ own experience and the OT Scriptures prove that Paul’s Gospel is the true gospel (3:1-4:31). V. Only Paul’s gospel allows believers to serve Christ successfully now so that they might rule with Him forever (5:1—6:10). VI. Epilogue: Paul’s gospel leads one to boast in Christ, not in the flesh (6:11-16). VI. Farewell (6:17-18)
