What are Integers? Integers are whole numbers and their opposites. Ex.(0, 1, 2, 3, 4…) Integers consist of negative and positive numbers. Zero is neither negative nor positive.

Positive Integers Integers that are greater than zero. They will always be to the right of the zero on the number line.

Negative Integers Integers that are less than zero. They will always be to the left of the zero on the number line.

Adding Integers When adding integers with the same signs, add the two numbers and keep that sign. When adding integers with opposite signs, subtract the smaller number from the larger number and keep the sign of the larger number.

Examples of Adding Integers (-7) + 8 = 1 15 + (-23) = -8 (-11) + (-5) = -16 Check out this site for more practice Adding Integers

Subtracting Integers First change problem to addition. Remember the phrase ADD THE OPPOSITE!!! Change the subtraction symbol to addition and the number that follows becomes its opposite. Then, follow the rules for adding integers. Visit this site to get some practice with integers. Magic Squares Game

Examples of Subtracting Integers (-14) – (-16) *Add the opposite (-14) + 16 = 2 19 – 11 *Add the opposite 19 + (-11) = 8

Multiplying and Dividing Integers Whenever you multiply or divide integers with opposite signs, your answer will be a negative. Whenever you multiply or divide integers with the same signs, your answer will be a positive.

Examples of Multiplying and Dividing Integers (-6)(-8) = 48 25 ÷ (-5) = -5 Check out these sites Multiplying Integers Dividing Integers 4(-11) = -44 (-72) ÷ (-9) = 8
