OSGeo History Feb 2006 – Initial organizational meeting of geospatial open source project participants to set up initial organization structure. Feb to April Subcommittees organized June First Board face to face meeting. Chartered as US 501(c)(4) Organization

OSGeo Mission To support the collaborative development of open source geospatial software, and promote its widespread use.

OSGeo Goals  Infrastructure support ( hosting, legal, incubation, etc.)  Promote freely available geodata, open standards, standards-based interoperability ( OGC standards)  Promote the use of open source software in the geospatial industry.  Education  Project quality  Software accessibility ( Cross platform binaries)  World-wide development with cross-platform and cross-language ( C, Java,Python, etc.) cooperation  Outreach  Recognition of contributors

OSGeo Project Incubation Purpose  Successfully operating open and collaborative development community  Clear IP oversight of code base  Adopt OSGeo Principles and operating principles  Mentored through the incubation process

Outreach  Annual International Conference - FOSS4G -  Locally organized conference in September which rotates continents every year on a 3 year rotation. Traditionally North America, Europe, and one of the other continents. FOSS4G 2015 is planned for Seoul, South Korea, Locations are chosen from bids from host counties/locations.  Regional conferences can be organized in the years that the main FOSS4G conference does not occur on that continent. FOSS4G North America (FOSS4G-NA) is planned for San Francisco, CA March  All conferences using the OSGeo name must coordinate with the OSGeo conference committee,

Recognition During the Annual FOSS4G conference, the Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software is presented to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the Geospatial Free and Open Source Software Community. To read more about the inspirational work of Sol Katz and to read about the work of the winners of the award, go to Recipients: 2014: Gary Sherman 2013: Arnulf Christl 2012: Venkatesh Raghavan 2011: Martin Davis 2010: Helena Mitasova 2009: Daniel Morissette 2008: Paul Ramsey 2007: Steve Lime 2006: Markus Neteler 2005: Frank Warmerdam
