Pedro Álvares Cabral A Portuguese Explorer First European to land in Brazil. Born 1467

Quick Facts Pedro had 6 Children. Had a wife named Isabel de Castro. His religion was Roman Catholic. His occupation was a Fleet Commander for the Kingdom of Portugal. His nationality was Portuguese.

Quick Facts (cont) He was the third son of Fernao Cabral. Pedro Álvares Cabral was a Portuguese nobleman, explorer, and navigator. Cabral had a patron named King Manuel I. Bartolomeu Dias was one of his officers. He was the 1 st European to see brazil on April 22, 1500.

Expedition King Manuel I sent Cabral on an expedition to India. Cabral's 13 ships left on March 9, On April 22, 1500, he sighted what is now called Brazil. He Claimed the land for Portugal and named it the "Island of the True Cross.“ Cabral stayed in Brazil for 10 days then continued on his way to India.

Expedition (continued) He encountered storms, shipwrecks, and fighting along his expedition to India. After this expedition, King Manuel appointed Vasco da Gama to head the next expedition in In 1502 Cabral retired. Since his voyage Pedro was having some problems, such as recurrent fever and a tremor. He withdrew in 1509.

Pedro Álvares Cabral ( Death) He spent his remaining years in Santarém, Portugal. In 1520 Pedro Cabral Died. Cabral died of unspecified causes. He was buried in a monastery in Santarém, Portugal. In 1848 his tomb was identified by the Brazilian historian, Francisco Adolfo Varnhagen.

Expeditions Christopher had 4 voyages. 1 st voyage: Land was sighted at 2 a.m. October 12 th, 1492, Columbus called the island San Salvador. 2 nd voyage: Columbus left Cádiz on September 24, 1493 with 17 ships carrying supplies, and about 1,200 men to look for new territories. 3 rd voyage: On May 30, 1498, Columbus left with six ships from Spain, and led the ships to the island of Porto Santo. 4 th voyage: In search of the Strait of Malacca to the Indian Ocean, with 3 ships.
