Compromise and Conflict Pages

Would Slavery Spread? United States getting larger – Louisiana Purchase – Mexican War Became territories and then states – Congress decided whether or not to allow slavery in each territory.

Slave State Slave states permitted slavery. Free states did not permit slavery. Congress tried to keep an equal number of free and slave states.

Compromises in Congress Congress argued over which territories would have slavery. Missouri wanted to join the Union. – Union is another name for the United States. Missouri Compromise in – Missouri = slave state – Maine = free state

Compromises in Congress Invisible line across the other territories. – Territories to the south could allow slavery Settlers in some territories could decide for themselves (popular sovereignty)

Kansas-Nebraska Act Gave popular sovereignty to the Kansas and Nebraska territories Abolitionists opposed the act – allowed slavery north of the line created in the Missouri Compromise Kansas = free state.

The Growing Crisis Fugitive Slave Law – slaves who had escaped to the North had to be returned to slavery – upset northerners Harriet Beecher Stowe – against the law – wrote Uncle Toms Cabin to describe the cruelty of slavery.

Dred Scott Asked the court for his freedom – argued that he should be free because he once lived in Illinois Supreme Court disagreed – Ruled that enslaved people were property and that living in a free state did not make them citizens. – The Supreme Court also said that the government could not keep slavery out of any territory

Dred Scott Ruling Victory for slave owners Slavery had to be legal in all territories, even if most settlers did not want it.

John Browns Raid John Brown – abolitionist – decided to fight slavery on his own – tried to start a rebellion attacked a U.S. Army post at Harpers Ferry, VA. – captured and sent to trial found guilty and hanged.

Review Americans disagreed about whether slavery should be allowed to spread. Congress tried to settle the slavery issue with a series of compromise. The Fugitive Slave Law and John Browns raid drove the North and South further apart.
