What do you think children were like in ancient Egypt? How were they like you and I? How were they different? Let’s take a look!

How did parents name their children? Many girls were called nefret, meaning "pretty." A baby boy might be given the name of his uncle or grandfather in the hopes that he would resemble them. Is this similar to how children in Egypt are named today? Think about your name.

Clothing Young children did not wear any clothes! When they did, children's clothes were simple and made of linen. Sometimes they had leather or reed sandals, and most wore bracelet or necklace of beads. How is that different from our clothes today?

Hair styles It was the custom to shave boy's heads, leaving only one plaited lock. This was cut off when the child reached 12 years. Do you like this style? Thumbs up or down?

Jewelry Children wore amulets (special necklaces with a charm) to protect them from evil spirits. Do you think that worked?

School Girls were not allowed to go to school in ancient Egypt. Some boys went, but not many. Usually they were boys from rich families training to be scribes (for jobs that required them to write or keep records)

Pets Children in ancient Egypt did have pets! Cats were the most popular pet, but people also kept dogs, monkeys, geese, and gazelle.

Toys and Games Egyptian children played with toys! Here are some things they played with:  Balls  Dolls  Spinning tops  Animals with moving parts  Board Games What do you think their toys were made of? Find out next…..

Did you guess….  Clay  Wood  Linen rags  String

Let’s watch this video to see some pictures of real toys that were found from the ancient Egyptian times: NypfVc
