International Holocaust Remembrance Day May 2, 2011 Essential Questions: What have we learned so that history does not repeat itself? How can you be a good citizen and prevent future problems?

What is Holocaust Remembrance? The United States Congress established the Days of Remembrance as our nations annual commemoration of the Holocaust and created the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum as a permanent living memorial to the victims. This year Holocaust Remembrance Day is Sunday, May 1. The Museum designated Justice and Accountability in the Face of Genocide: What Have We Learned?Justice and Accountability in the Face of Genocide: What Have We Learned?

What Makes a Good Citizen? What Does The Audience Say? Speaks up Follows the rules Cares about the environment Doesnt judge people Keeps on top of current events

The Indians Thousands of years before Christopher Columbus discovered America, the Native Americans inhabited the land for approximately 12,000 years. It is believed by the time Christopher Columbus arrived there were about 10 million Native Americans living in what is now called the United States. According to the 2010 US Census, Native American make up only about 1.5% of the population.

What Happened to the Indians? They got sick from disease such as measles, chicken pox, and small pox. Warfare: Europeans killed to take over the land. Killed off some Native American Cultures In essence, it was a genocide.

BLACK HISTORY The African slave trade has been alive for centuries. While most of us associate slavery with 18th and 19th century America, the truth is that the African slave trade started long before America became involved. It is still alive today in certain parts of the African continent.

BLACK HISTORY cont. In the rest of the world, the African slave trade became common in Europe first, starting with Portugal, who took slaves to Brazil to mine the mountains. The Caribbean soon followed, and then other countries of South and Central America. The US African slave trade was far smaller than that managed by other countries. Of all slaves to reach America, only 4.4 percent ended up in North America territory.

BLACK HISTORY cont. The earliest records of the African slave trade in America date back to the beginning of the 17th century, when racial slavery was a punishment for servants who broke the law. In the 18th century, slaves were mostly used in the South to work in plantations and farms, especially by rich landowners who could afford the extra expense in order to maximize their profits. By the start of the Civil War in 1860, there were approximately four million slaves of African origin in the US.

BLACK HISTORY cont. The African slave trade was abolished around the world at different times. Britain stopped slavery in 1807, although slaves were not officially declared free until 1833, when the Slavery Abolition Act was passed. The rest of Europe followed close behind, with certain African countries forbidding slavery early in the 20th century. The African slave trade remains alive in certain parts of Africa, Nigeria is notable for trafficking children inside African boundaries.

The Holocaust The Holocaust was the systematic, persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews between 1933 and This was done by the Nazis. The Nazis believed that if you werent blond haired and blue eyed you were not racially superior and didnt deserve to be treated as others. They targeted many groups of people including the disabled, blacks, and many more…but their primary target was the Jewish people.

The Holocaust cont…."Holocaust" is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by fire." The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were "racially superior" and that the Jews, were a threat to the so-called German racial community. Adolf Hitler started the Nazi regime and they took over the German democracy in 1933.

The Holocaust cont… The Nazi Party came up with a plan to annihilate the Jews and called it The Final Solution…they would kill off all of the Jewish People. Anyone who was caught helping the Jews were killed as well. People were scared to say anything and were silent witnesses to horrific acts of human cruelty. cille85.wordpress.com

The Holocaust cont… The Nazis set up concentration camps where Jews, if they were lucky to be chosen to live, had to work with little or no food, lice, disease, sickness, and guns in their faces all day. jewishgen.org

The Holocaust cont… Good citizens of Germany, Poland, and other European countries hid some Jews for years in attics, holes, and hiding spots between walls….for years! Priests, peasants and nuns hid many Jews. Some Jews found refuge in the forests, where people brought them food and clean clothes Ikbkronika.lt

Oskar Schindler A Good Citizen A wealthy business man with close connections with the Nazi Party. He couldnt live knowing what the Nazis were doing to the Jews.

Oskar Schindler A Good Citizen Oskar decided to use his ties with the Nazi Party to help the Jews. He convinced the Nazis to let Jews work for him in his factories. The names of the Jews were given to him, which became known as SCHINDLERS LIST. If he got caught, he and all the Jews who worked for him would have been killed.

Oskar Schindler A Good Citizen Asked why he had intervened on behalf of the Jews, Schindler replied: The persecution of Jews in the General Government in Polish territory gradually worsened in its cruelty. In 1939 and 1940 they were forced to wear the Star of David and were herded together and confined in ghettos. In 1941 and 1942 this unadulterated sadism was fully revealed. And then a thinking man, who had overcome his inner cowardice, simply had to help. There was no other choice. Oskar Schindler, 1964 interview.

AFRICA Darfur now faces the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, with 30,000 people already killed and more than a million internally displaced. International aid agencies say that even if humanitarian relief arrives now, 350,000 people may still die.

AFRICA-Why are they killing innocent men, women, and children? In Darfur, the Sudanese government is destroying African Muslim communities because some among them have challenged authoritarian rule. In Darfur ethnic and racial identities have also been part of the conflict. blogs.muskegonisd.org
