My Dream Career: By: Kyra Moura

What They Do Psychology is the study of people; their behavior, motivations, thoughts and feelings. Psychologists are interested in how people act as individuals, and interact in groups. They use their understanding together with counseling and other kind of therapy, to help people avoid, overcome or control their problems.

Skills Needed a desire to help other people, and the ability to maintain a professional distance excellent communication skills a calm and patient approach

Basic Skills the ability to work as part of a team a tolerant and patient approach good problem solving and logical thinking skills the ability to act in the best interests of clients, while maintaining confidentiality to be accurate, especially in terms of gathering and using data computer literacy skills.

Interests and Values An interest in people, their abilities and temperaments. There values are helping other people.

Education and Requirements A master's degree or its equivalent in counseling psychology Verbal and quantitative GRE scores with a total greater than 1000 and with individual verbal and quantitative scores 450 or greater. If the applicant has taken the GRE in Writing, the writing score must be submitted. Graduate grade point average greater than 3.5

Money and Hours Working hours depend on duties and the type of psychology practiced. Many psychologists work normal office hours, but some also work evenings. The starting salary for a graduate trainee psychologist is likely to be around £20,000 a year. For more experienced psychologists, salaries can range between £22,500 and £37,000 a year. Senior psychologists, responsible for managing a department and a number of staff, can earn from £37,000 to £60,000. Psychologists in the private sector or in industry may earn up to £100,000.

Money and Hours Hours journalists need to be flexible about their working hours. They typically work long, irregular hours, including nights, weekends and public holidays. Money will depend on an individual's experience, the type of employer and the budget available. Expenses such as travel, accommodation and meals will often be included in a negotiated salary package.
