Lesson 2 Idling

What is Idling? When the engine of a car is running but the vehicle is not moving Restarting your car does not burn more fuel than leaving it idling ▫ Idling for just 10 seconds wastes more gas than restarting the engine

Why Do We Idle? People think it’s better to leave their car running than to turn it off and back on To be more comfortable: ▫ Running the heat or air-conditioner ▫ Playing the radio

Where Do We Idle? School pick up and drop off lines Drive thrus Driveways Malls Banks After 10 seconds, it’s best that you turn off your car!

Turn Off For What? Idling pollutes the air and water and harms health: Tailpipes spew out pollution that can really hurt us ▫ For every gallon of gas used, 24 pounds of pollution are produced This pollution affects the air and it builds up on the ground and rain water carries them to the ocean where they harm sea life This pollution is linked to diseases such as: ▫ Asthma ▫ Heart disease ▫ Chronic bronchitis ▫ Cancer

Turn Off For What? Idling wastes fuel and money: The average car uses about 0.15 gallons of fuel per hour of idling. That's about ¢50 worth of gas If you do that once a day for 250 days a year, that's more 35 gallons, and more than $ per car per year!

Conclusion Idling is when the engine of a car is running but the vehicle is not moving Restarting your car does not burn more fuel than leaving it idling Idling for just 10 seconds wastes more gas than restarting the engine For every gallon of gas used, 24 pounds of pollutants are produced Pollutants from idling are linked to diseases Pollutants from idling affect the air and they build up on the ground and rain water carries them to the ocean where they harm sea life
