Introduction It has come to my attention recently that the air pollution in Hong Kong is getting very terrible. It is often impossible to see from one side of the Hong Kong's harbour to the other and pollution-related deaths are seriously on the increase. The city's pollution is ruining its attraction as a place to live and to work.

What is Air Pollution? 1. One type of air pollution is the release of air from burning fuel for energy, like Diesel smoke. This type of pollution is called “black carbon” pollution. 2. Another type of air pollution is the release of gas such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and chemical vapors. These can be included in chemical reactions once they are in the atmosphere, forming smog and acid rain. 3. Pollution is also inside our homes, offices, and schools. Some of these pollutants can be created by inside the house such as smoking and cooking. Air pollution started when we released too much air that causes problems for humans, plants, and animals. The affect pollution made was producing a hole in the ozone layer. When the sun’s heat rays go through the hole, the rays will be automatically trapped because our atmosphere is too thick and won’t be able to come out unless it comes out from the hole. 5 Main Sources The main sources of air pollution are: 1)industries 2)power generation 3)construction work and road traffic 4)Dust from construction activities is also of major concern, given its proximity to populated areas.

Road Vehicles MMMMany of the cars have diesel engines, which are poorly maintained TTTThe continued growth in vehicle numbers mean pollution from motor vehicles continues to be a problem.

Industries IIIIndustries is the major problem Hong Kong is having right now IIIIt started by the invention of technology that made use of the new sources energy like coil, oil, and gas which made the industry develop and create more pollution TTTThis causes a threat to our health as well.

Health Problems Related to Air Pollution Short-term effects It includes pain in the eyes, nose and throat, and upper respiratory problems such as Bronchitis and Pneumonia. Other places can include headaches, nausea, and allergic reactions. Long-term effects It includes chronic respiratory disease, lung cancer, heart disease, and even harm the brain, nerves, liver, or kidneys.

Governments Action To reduce the amount of pollution from vehicles, sulphur fuel was not allowed to be used in vehicles. The government in Hong Kong had recently said that the smoking ban should be spread to more areas. The Government encouraged us to have environmental protection.

Conclusion Preventing air pollution is a much better way than fixing it after it has already been caused. The easiest way to decrease pollutants is to save energy. Such as switching to sulphur free fuels like natural gas and using renewed energy sources like the sun and wind. Using public transportation systems like cycling, walking and keeping vehicles in good condition are some of the most effective ways in reducing gas emissions. If you use a private car, it causes over six times as much fuel per person as going by bus.
