Journal 10/19: Responsibility Elie Wiesel writes in the Preface to the New Translation that he does not know the response to Auschwitz, but that “[he does] know that there is ‘response’ in responsibility.” What is your responsibility once you have just witnessed that another genocide is happening in this world?

 “An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don't.” ~ Anatole France Think about this quote. How does this quote apply to you? Based on your thinking, what is the importance of an education? Please compose a half page journal entry about your thoughts on this topic. Journal: An Education 10/21

It’s the life in your years.” – Abraham Lincoln In a half page journal entry, please address the following question: What inspires you? Please be specific with your response and fully explain your answer(s).

10/27: Journal: Neutrality Please respond to the following quote from Elie Wiesel: "We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." Answer questions such as… Do you agree or disagree? What was his purpose in saying this? How can you relate it to bullying? Have you ever been in a situation where you stayed quiet and regret it now? Please make sure that your entry is a half page.

OCTOBER 31 ST : OBITUARY In the spirit of Halloween, I would like you to write your own obituary. You must write this in third person. You must include within your obituary the following things:  How old are you when you died?  Who are you survived by?  Where were you living?  What were you doing for a living?  Where did you go to school?  How did you die?

Journal: Night 11/1/11 Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky. Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never. In a half page journal entry, please tell me what you think is the significance of this quote. Please tell me exactly what you think Elie Wiesel is saying here.

In a half page journal entry or more, please address the following prompt: Think about a person who is no longer in your life. Bring him/her alive in words! Remember, you are creating someone’s story, so make it worthy.  Describe this person (physically and personality)  Why were they special to you?  What still remains with you about this person after he/she has moved on?  If you had the opportunity to speak to this person today, what would you say?
