3.  Direct quotation or paraphrasing must be cited Quotation: "The yellow star? Oh well, what of it? You don't die of it.“ Example: Elie’s father reacts to the yellow stars by saying, “’The yellow star? Oh well, what of it?’” (Wiesel 9). Example: Elie’s father, for example, is not concerned about the yellow stars, assuring them that one cannot die from it (Wiesel 9). Example: After being informed that they would have to wear the yellow star, Elie’s father remains calm.

4.  Check it out with an informational Text! Quotation: “In 1997, when Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came out, children's fiction was a publishing backwater.” Example: Prior to the series release, the genre of children’s fiction had not achieved much attention (“The Harry Potter Effect” 1). Example: “When Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone came out,” the genre of children’s literature was a low priority for publishers (“The Harry Potter Effect” 1). Example: Before Prisoner of Azkaban was published, children’s fiction was unimportant to publishes.

5.  A direct quotation  a complete sentence.  A direct quote cannot stand alone as a sentence. Quotation: "Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed." Example: Elie describes how he “shall never forget that night, the first night in the camp, which has turned [his] life into one long night” (Wiesel 32). Example: "Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed” (Wiesel 32). Example: Upon their arrival at Auschwitz, Elie discusses how that first night in the camp completely changed his life (Wiesel 32).

6.  A direct quotation  a complete sentence.  Here’s another example from and informational text. Quotation: “Some children's authors have won greater advances, sales and recognition thanks to Harry Potter.” Example: “Some children's authors have won greater advances, sales and recognition thanks to Harry Potter” (“The Harry Potter Effect” 1). Example: Thanks to J.K. Rowling’s success, “some children's authors have won greater advances, sales and recognition thanks to Harry Potter” (“The Harry Potter Effect” 1). Example: “Some children's authors have won greater advances, sales and recognition” because of J.K. Rowlings unique series (“The Harry Potter Effect” 1).

7.  Use sections just like phrases in a sentence.  Any minor changes in [ ] Quotation: "I was a body. Perhaps less than that even: a starved stomach. The stomach alone was aware of the passage of time." Example: Time became meaningless in the camp as Elie describes that his “stomach alone was aware of the passage of time” (Wiesel 50). Example: While at the camp, Elie was “a body. Perhaps less than that even: a starved stomach” (Wiesel 50). Example: After weeks of starvation, Elie explains that “I was a body” (Wiesel 50).

8.  Let’s try this one with an informational text too! Quotation: “The Harry Potter series grew in popularity among both young readers and adults concurrently with the publication of the third book, Prisoner of Azkaban, in 1999.” Example: “The Harry Potter series grew in popularity among both young readers and adults” after the publication of Prisoner of Azkaban (“Scholarship on Harry Potter” 1). Example: After the publication of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the series immediately grew in popularity for both young and adult audiences (“Scholarship on Harry Potter” 1). Example: The article “Scholarship on Harry Potter” explains to “young readers and adults concurrently with the publication of the third book, Prisoner of Azkaban” (“Scholarship on Harry Potter” 1).

9. Quotation: “We were not afraid. And yet, if a bomb had fallen on the blocks, it alone would have claimed hundreds of victims on the spot” (Wiesel 57).
