Humanity “Their fingers on the triggers, they did not deprive themselves of the pleasure. If one of us stopped for a second, a quick shot eliminated the filthy dog” (85).

Faith and Fathers 1 “And in spite of myself, a prayer formed inside me, a prayer to this God in whom I no longer believed.” “Oh God, Master of the Universe, give me the strength never to do what Rabbi Eliahu’s son has done” (91).

Music “I don’t know how long he played. I was overcome by sleep. When I awoke at daybreak, I saw Juliek facing me, hunched over, dead. Next to him lay his violin, trampled, an eerily poignant little corpse” (95).

Faith and Fathers 2 “I gave him what was left of my soup. But my heart was heavy. I was aware that I was doing it grudgingly. Just like Rabbi Eliahu’s son, I had not passed the test” (107).

The Mirror “From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me” (115).
