Responsibilities of a Coach

Knowing your responsibilities as a coach Responsibilities to performers, their sport, their profession and themselves. We can split these into 3 categories. 1.Coaches responsibilities: delivery of the appropriate coaching sessions to aid the development of performers. 2.Health and safety: maintenance of a safe environment for performers. 3.Professional conduct: the demonstration of proper personal and professional behaviour and the conduct in the light of legal responsibilities

Beyond The Law? In the early stages of the 2006/2007 Premiership season, Manchester City were at home to Portsmouth. During the match an incident occurred in which Mendes (Portsmouth) chased the ball as it ran towards the sidelines, as he kicked it down field Thatcher (Man City) came across and forearmed smashed him across the jaw. Mendes was left unconscious, suffered a fit and needed Oxygen. Thatcher was booked and subsequently investigated by the police and FA resulting in a ban and £120,000 fine. Amidst the press Man City boss was quoted as saying: “ From my point of view, once the players cross the white line they are under the authority of the referee, they are the ones who deal with things that happen during the matches. Police forces in this country are overburdened as it is.” What do you think of this reaction from the manager? Was his comment in line with good practice regarding professional conduct?

An NSPCC report, ‘Child Maltreatment in the UK’, was pubished in Nov 2000 which included statistical evidence: 43% of young people identified bullying or discrimination as being the most common cause of distress or upset. Bullying occurred as a result of personal features % said that they had been physically attacked while being bullied. 6% of boys under 18 and 4% of girls under 18 reported a serious lack of supervision. 6% of boys under 8 and 8% of girls under 18 reported serious physical abuse. What are your feelings on these statistics? What would you do as a coach to prevent bullying and physical abuse from taking place in your coaching session?

Claire is a level 2 tennis coach working with beginners teaching the fundamental skills of the game. She recognises that she does not have knowledge or time to teach the advanced skills, however she is content to work on introducing and developing young players to gain more enjoyment from the game. One of Claires players, Craig, has just won a regional U14’s tournament – her first success. After the match Craigs opponents coach Simon approaches Claire. He is more qualified and coaches to junior national level. Simon invites Craig to join his own coaching group. Claire is unsure whether Craig should join Simons group. What might be some of the positives of Craig joining Simons group? What might be some of the negatives of Craig joining Simons group? Should these issues be considered in relation to Claire or to Craig? What should Claire do?
