How Health Needs are Met Describe, in detail, the ways in which the Scottish Government has tried to improve the health of people in Scotland.

Learning Intentions I will: Gain an understanding of the ways that health needs are met in Scotland. Understand that the Scottish Parliament, Councils and the Private Sector help to encourage healthy living in Scotland.

How Health Needs are Met… Met by all areas of the government and outside agencies. Approaches are based on ideas of individualism and collectivism. The government accepts that individuals don’t have full control over what affects their health. Also encourages people to be responsible and make the right decisions where health is concerned.

Scottish Parliament Aim – To make Scotland a better, healthier place for everyone, no matter where they live. Working with NHS Scotland to discourage excessive smoking, drinking and poor diets. Schools – “Health Promoting Schools” – encourage healthy eating and exercise. E.g. some schools have banned sweets and fizzy drinks. Aim to reduce heart disease and obesity and raise life expectancy.

Councils Schools (Health Promotion and Nutrition) (Scotland) Act 2007 – all councils responsible for ensuring that health promotion is at the heart of school life. Nutritionally balanced meals in schools. Swipe card system – remove stigma attached to free school meals. Sports Comprehensives – e.g. North Lanarkshire Council – encourage participation in P.E., sport etc…

Private Sector Available largely for those with higher disposable income and/or private health insurance (E.g. BUPA) Public Private Partnership scheme (PPP) – Allows Scottish Government to build assets such as hospitals with money from private companies who then lease them back to government – improves hospital buildings, equipment – better service.

Questions 1.Explain what the government has done to meet health needs. 2.Describe the ways councils aim to meet health needs. 3.What does the private sector do to meet health needs? 4.Why is education important in tackling health inequalities?
