Warm-up: What do you think It means to be a civilization? Civilization Case Study: The Bedouin

Brief Review HistoryPre-history Who studies it? What do they study?

Terms: 1)Austrapithecines 2) Homo erectus 3) Homo sapiens 4) Neanderthals 5) Cro-Magnons 6) Paleolithic Era Definitions: A) Period where humans learned to make tools out of stone B) “thinking man”, emerged around 250,000 years ago; Cro-Magnons and Modern humans are in this group C) First hominids- creatures to walk Upright and to make simple stone tools, Remains found in Eastern and Southern Africa D) found in Germany between 100,000 And 30,000 BC; first early people to bury their dead, perhaps shows belief in afterlife E) group that also spreads out from Europe, Credited with the first cave paintings, also simply Called homo sapiens sapiens, replace Neanderthals F) middle step in human development, first to Leave Africa and move into Europe, first to make Fire, “upright man”

Paleolithic Era “Old Stone Age” Came from Africa and spread to the other continents hunter/gatherers Begin using language Women- have children, make and keep the fire; both look for food Paint on the walls of caves Neanderthals are the first to bury their dead

Neolithic Era Two HUGE changes: 1) domestication (raising) of animals 2) start farming (growing food) Women were probably the first farmers Developed in China, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas at the same time Consequences: People build permanent houses Specialization of labor- some farm, some are priests, some trade

With your group, talk about: What are the requirements to be a civilization?

Now let's apply your new definition to current Bedouins. What do you know about how Bedouins live today in Jordan? Does this make them a civilization or not a civilization? Think about how Bedouins in Jordan Lived 200 years ago.

After you finish discussing with your group, we will discuss it as a class. Next question to talk about with your group: Are there any drawbacks or disadvantages to being 'civilized'? What might be some examples that relate to the Bedouin?

Six Components of Civilization Cities Government Religion Social structure Writing Art Neolithic Revolution Civilization

Exit Slip: Answer this question in your notebook that you keep in the classroom: What are the six components of civilization? Are there any others that should be on the list? Should any of these not be on the list?
